Fictober Day 15: I Thought You Had Forgotten
Warning and/or Potential Trigger: Mild hints/mentions of child abuse
(Personally I don’t believe the content is strong enough to censor it under a break, but just to be safe I added the trigger warning above)
---------
When one is kidnapped by a giant mutant spider, it is almost certainly never a good idea to spit in the aforementioned Spider’s eight eyes.
But when you’re a terrified eleven-year-old girl who got used to living in another abuse cycle and playing by its rules before being kidnapped, you don’t always think of the consequences that come with that kind of action.
Horrified, Katiuscia gaped at what she’d just done.
Spider didn’t move for about ten or fifteen seconds, which felt like an eternity. Then something twitched, and slowly he reached up with his front left leg and in one swoop, wiped off the glob of phlegm like a windshield wiper with a snowball. His body hairs bristled and stood up on end.
“You,” he ground out in a low voice. “Are on. Incredibly. Thin. Ice. Signorina.” Sharp needle-like things prickled out from his fangs, and it didn’t take rocket science to figure out what those were for. “Remind me, per favore, why I don’t just liquify you right now and get it all over with.”
It took all of Katiuscia’s willpower not to start hyperventilating. “R-ransom,” she choked out.
“What did you say?!”
“I said ransom!”
The eight eyes were glowing an ominous red. “Ransom! A ransom that has gone nowhere in THREE! WEEKS!” he snarled. “Because you can’t be bothered to tell me your own father’s name!”
“I can’t remember it!” she cried.
“Enough! You get five seconds.”
“No...”
“Five seconds to remember, or I’m putting an end to you and your sniveling existence. Cinque!”
“No, please!”
“Quatro!”
“No!”
“Tre! Due! U—”
The scream ripped its way out of her throat. “GIOSEFFO!!!”
Silence.
Spider’s bristling hairs softened back into their natural downiness, and the red glare faded from his eyes. There was an instant shift in the atmosphere. “I thought you had forgotten,” he said sarcastically.
Katiuscia was gasping too hard to reply.
“Hmm, Gioseffo,” Spider mused to himself. “Not many Italian men go by that nickname. And even fewer have a daughter with a Russian name. Yes. Yes, this lead might actually go somewhere.” The needles receded back into his fangs, which clicked in a way that meant he was smiling. “You’ve been a good girl today, signorina.”
As he turned and pattered down the tunnel towards where his cobbled-together computer was, an exhausted and overwhelmed Katiuscia cried softly. Partly from leftover terror, partly from relief, partly from the disorienting confusion of how she’d suddenly remembered her father’s name when she hadn’t been able to for all this time. But puzzling that out right now would take too much brain power. As it was, Katiuscia cried until she drifted into a fitful sleep.
Where the dreams of the mysterious woman came back.
