Trying something I saw on Pinterest
If you're ever worried about whether your writing is too self indulgent, I just want you to remember that Sharknado had 5 sequels. I'm only partway through watching Sharknado 6: It's About Time, but already they've traveled through time and ridden a pteronadon into a Sharknado so they could use the magic teleportation portal inside of it to travel forward in time to King Arthur's time, where they are currently battling a Sharknado full of fire-breathing dragon sharks with Excalibur, which is a chainsaw sword that calls lightning. You're fine. In fact, be a little more self indulgent if anything.
op I would like to formally apologize for thinking you were lying
How are they rated like this
Because I'm correct. The movies aren't the greatest movies of all time or anything, but they are loved, because they are fun, because the creators clearly had fun making exactly what they wanted, no matter how indulgent it might seem to anyone else, and the actors put their hearts into it and were also clearly having fun. It's okay to do that, and making something you really want to make instead of what you think other people want you to make WILL show in your creation. I will go bonkers loving a movie or show or book or piece of artwork that loves itself and is fun before I ever do for some bland, soulless thing.
A lot of people have mistaken my original post as a dig at Sharknado. It's not. It's 100% saying if you were a little more like that, it's actually fine. People will still love what you create. Hell, they might even love it more when you make things you clearly liked to make.

okay but "the symbolism is Real and Trying to Kill You" is my favorite kind of symbolism
like yeah the monster is a representation of your unresolved trauma and guilt and a manifestation of the sins of your past but it's also a real creature and it's going to fucking Get you
fields of mistria is the first farming/life sim to write child characters that are actually well-written enough for me to want to build a friendship with them
I think your tags are interesting because I DO think is because people only view children as annoying little brats instead of…small humans who are learning.
The kids in Mistria are acting like how actual children act like, not how people think children act. And even then it has been shown time and time again that kids “acting bratty” to adults is adults using their adult logic onto children, when kids think in completely different ways than adults BECAUSE they’re kids.
But yeah fundamentally people don’t understand how children are just acting like children and think they’re being annoying when like….yeah is in human nature to be annoying lol
I’m so glad you said this bc I wanted to articulate on my tag more but couldn’t figure out how to put it into words.
The way a lot of kids are written makes it clear that the author thinks that kids are annoying on purpose with the specific intent of upsetting people rather than…kids behaving in a developmentally appropriate way.
I think the Mistria kids works because they have elements of the behaviors that can make kids annoying, but then they allow them to be more than just those things. A lot of people might’ve written the kids as “the one who likes bugs”, “the one who wants to be a princess”, and “the tomboy” and then just stopped there. And if that’s literally all they were, I think they’d be annoying.
But the game went a step further and considered how their interests would interact and how they would get along as a group. A great example is Luc showing Maple bugs that have a regal look because he wants to share his interest in a way that will appeal to her. And the game includes the farmer in their shenanigans as well, esp during the Friday nights at the Inn.
And so rather than their hyper specific interests being annoying, it becomes endearing.

not going to say direct spoilers for the tadc finale but wow did you guys know that something can be "confirmed" without it being explicitly said because the writer(s) expected the audience to have media literacy? like, for example, if a character is overly hungry and tired when their blood sugar is low and hides an insulin pump under long sleeves, but they don't ever look to the camera and say "i have diabetes," we can still put the very simple pieces together and say "okay, so they canonically have diabetes and don't want to admit it." and yet some of y'all look at these kinds of scenes and are like. well they didn't say it so it's not canon. y'all be looking at this kinds of puzzles and start crying bc it's too hard for you
