[ Gonna break out the big guns before I head off to garden for a bit, but an unpopular opinion that I’ve had for quite some time is that I really don’t like nor appreciate “reblog karma”, and that actually has been a determining factor of whether or not I roleplay with someone or follow back.
Like, the whole thing seems really… Spoiled. It was something that on paper it meant well, that yes, people should send in memes and engage with others and not funnel about recycled memes but like, at the end of the day the concept was taken faaaaar too seriously and the tone of reblog karma just comes off as absolutely bratty and obnoxious to me.
To put it in perspective, say that I am a single-muse roleplayer. I follow someone who has a multi-muse and they reblog three really interesting memes that I’d like to pass the baton with. With reblog karma applied, I would need to send in something for each meme I reblog, and that instantly adds three threads. Three more! Or, heck, even if it was a single muse and the whole “oh, you can reblog x amount but leave at least one meme in my inbox ;) “ is still a mighty pain in the ass because you don’t know if it’ll lead to an actual thread or not and then it’s one more on top of you that you didn’t plan. ]
[ I understand that people should be more proactive, and nowadays it’s as easy as clicking a blog and clicking the little “plus speech bubble” on the top right to drop an ask via that, but the idea that you have to engage in a thread for every meme reblogged AND the fact that reblog karma has devolved into this guilt-tripping sense of “I’m not a meme machine!!!!! I want things sent in!!!!! If you reblog this, you HAVE to send things in, it’s only fair!!!!!!!” is a super turn off.
I may not look it, but I always have had periods where I would reblog killer memes and no one would send anything in but I would see my friends get showered with responses. And that’s okay! That’s totally okay. Heck, I’ll even specify in my tags either “I would like to receive some!” or “I’m only circulating, you don’t have to send one in” so that people wouldn’t feel obligated to roleplay with me or send in something that they’re not in the mood for.
Roleplaying is a hobby. It’s not an obligation. Reblog karma turns it into one, and that’s why it’s a real disdain of mine. ]
