Some people have theorized that the bloodthirstiness then was him seeking to assuage his guilt for Lasan by imaginging that all lasat were like the one that slaughtered his unit once they were out and had no way to fight back yet left him alive. A wrong and evil sentiment, yet an understandable one when anger and vengeance are often used to to fight guilt and grief in an Empire that already indoctrinates its people with anti-alien sentiments.
idunno man, it takes a particular kind of sadism to turn weaponry designed for use in ship to ship combat, and later banned by the galactic empire, on people and enjoy using it, and boast about enjoying using it
zero handwaving that can excuse that
edit: like. let’s not forget. this is the same empire that blew up a whole entire planet. and would have done so multiple more times if the rebel alliance hadn’t stopped them. they ain’t squeamish people.
