Wilco | Muzzle of Bees (Live)
Creeping into 2017
A Song a Day #11
‘Muzzle of Bees’ - Wilco (from 2004′s A Ghost Is Born)
My favourite Wilco song is a study in contrasts between soft and harsh sounds - and how both of these sounds can join together to create a cathartic whole. The soft aspects of the song are some of Wilco’s prettiest moments, including acoustic guitar picking, piano and Jeff Tweedy’s soft vocal describing a new love (the line “half of it’s you, half is me” a clear examination of the perils of being in a couple). These soft and stunning sections of the song are challenged by the song’s loud and harsh sections, where Tweedy picks up the electric guitar and plays it as if it’s his last day on earth. The middle section, featuring the first solo, is relatively tame compared to the song’s coda, where Tweedy essentially shreds his guitar and creates one of Wilco’s most cathartic moments, aiming for the stratosphere and reaching it. While this use of guitar since Jay Bennett’s departure after ‘Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’ is certainly different, it highlights Tweedy’s change in head-space and shows how direct and powerful the band can be.
