Blood Fight (1989)
Blu-ray MVD Visual 2020
Bloodfight is one of those easy to dismissed movies. On the surface, it looks like Bloodsport ripoff. It has more of a plot and far more character development than Van Damme's movie. My only issue is that the dialogue is in English, which would be great if that were everyone's primary language, but it's not. The performances can be clunky because of it, but Simon Yam is a great actor. The others aren't Shakespearian level performers, but they're experienced enough character actors to get the point across. Bloodfight is a very good movie from the era of VHS weekend rentals. It's a gem. I bought the film on tape, DVD and now on Blu-ray. I like this movie a lot, and it's a very nostalgic watch that triggers some great memories.
Unfortunately, it's not the most exceptional HD transfer I've ever seen, but it's the best the movie has ever looked on home video. It probably doesn't help that I have my Gamera 4K remaster set from Arrow Video on the brain. Anyway, I'm happy this is in my collection.

Movies Till Dawn: Mad Monster Party I
“The Evil Dead” (1981, Lionsgate) A quintet of Michigan college students makes the unfortunate decision to read from a book of incantations, which unleashes demonic forces determined to turn them, as the great drive-in critic Joe Bob Briggs rightly put it, into “Spam in a cabin.” Ferociously energetic no-budget horror indie launched the careers of writer/director Sam Raimi, actor Bruce Campbell a…

“The Martian Chronicles” (1980, Kino Lorber) Six-hour, three-part miniseries attempts to translate Ray Bradbury‘s collection of short stories and prose poems about the fallout of an attempted colonization of Mars by Earth astronauts. Screenwriter Richard Matheson uses mission commander Rock Hudson as the unifying element to pull the source material into a single, cohesive plotline, but the canvas…

“The Yellow Birds” (2017, Lionsgate) Adaptation of Kevin Powers’ much-celebrated noveltraces the conflicts in war and at home endured by two American soldiers during the Gulf War. Alden Ehrenreichand Tye Sheridanare two sides of the same untested coin as new recruits who endure director Alexandre Moors’ onslaught of battlefield horror; it’s visceral and grisly and well-handled by both leads, as…

At 90 minutes the film is a bit of a slog and I could see it being slightly more successful as a short film but for those demented enough to seek out a lo-fi indie feature about a clown hunt that's chock full o' quips like "Why don't you eat clown meat?", "It tastes funny" there's some definite silliness to be had, like clown meat it's probably an acquired taste.
