The Disturbing (and fascinating, plot-wise) Potential of the MX's
Thinking about the first episodes, I've been considering a few things I've learned about the standard police synthetic 'partners'. What do we know about them?
- They have, by design, no emotions. They run solely on metrics in their programming that determine that a particular situation will get a specific response, period.
- Their actions seem based on the laws and regulations and the 'greatest good for the greatest numbers'.
- And here is where it gets creepy. They all run on the same frequency. They also communicate with each other in some sense, and use that sort of collective communication to keep tabs on their human partners even when off duty. Kennex's extremely temporary first partner had known, due to another MX being in that area, where Kennex was the night before AND what had been on his breath.
Since they aren't self aware, have nothing other than their programming and it's interpretation of regulations to govern their activities, they will do what they are programmed to do, in all cases. Their interconnectedness means that it is likely a glitch, or being hacked, could spread easily through the entire group, and they would not know, themselves, if their, or the behavior of any other MX was suspicious or if they had been 'compromised'. They are easily used as a form of surveillance or monitoring device even by proper authorities, or perhaps already are.. All due to the very qualities they were given that makes them supposedly 'superior' to the more emotionally motivated, empathetic DRN (Dorian) model.
I wonder if this is something they will explore?
