This week's #YamahaOfYesterday is the 1974 MX100A. In 1974, Yamaha completely updated its “MX” lineup of off-road motorcycles. The MX100A introduced a stronger, double-loop, motocross-specific frame with a much lower center of gravity for better handling. and “Thermal-Phase” rear shocks had built-in oil coolers and interchangeable jets for adjusting compression and rebound. The 97cc, two-stroke, single-cylinder engine was equipped with a reed valve in the intake tract--called “Torque Induction” by Yamaha—which was one of the company’s best-known technical innovations of the 1970s. “Autolube” was also featured on the MX100A, which constantly adjusted the flow of lubricating oil into the fuel mixture according to engine load and speed.
