⠀ Taking you back on this #throwbackthursday with the 1978 DT100E #YamahaOfYesterday ride. When the DT1 250 debuted in 1968, it was a huge success, universally heralded for its versatility on the dirt as well as on the street, for its reliability, and for the performance of its two-stroke, single-cylinder engine. It wasn’t long before Yamaha expanded the “DT” line of dual-purpose bikes to encompass engine displacements from 50cc all the way up to 400cc. A decade after the DT1 was introduced, the 1978 DT100E was the perfect size for just about everyone. Larger than a mini-bike and smaller than a full-size enduro, the DT100E struck a chord with American consumers. It was the perfect motorcycle to take along when camping, to run errands on around town, to blaze trails through meadows and woods, or to ride to school or work. #TBT #Yamaha #DT100 #1978 #Enduro @2Stroke #Motorcycle
This picture was taken in the first few days that I got it. I got it for about $600 from another college student in my town. The gas tank is black now, but I'd like to get it color matched to the exhaust plate to that silver from 1983. A big list of the work done to it below!
Cosemetic stuff:
Gas tank was corroded and needed sealing, which can't happen with paint on it so I sanded it, dunked it in acid, and then sealed and painted it. New grips have been installed as well (also functional, it was interfering with the throttle snapping back). The exhaust silencer has been repainted as well.
Functional stuff:
Petcock has been fully cleaned and dismantled. New spark plug. Fuel is running clean now (see tank stuff above). The exhaust has a ton of carbon, but nothing I can do rn. I've checked the cylinder head and decarbonized it long with the piston. I'm replacing the piston rings and bottom gasket which blew out.
The throttle tube was replaced and I should probably get a new cable before it snaps. The clutch is missing in the photos, it was clean snapped off. I've got a new one on it now. In the first few days when I was running it I just rev matched.
Motor and transmission oil has been bled and changed. I need to change the hydraulics since it's around 2-3k miles. Normal chain maintenance has been done too!
I've checked the ignition coil since it won't start up without starter fluid (bad compression, but I was worried about spark too). It's good! This model doesn't have a CDI (thank god). The wiring is a bit wonky because it had 2 other owners. You plug in the left turn signal, and the right turns it on. Just simple rerouting! The first thing I did when I got it was replace the battery. The guy at the shop laughed at it being a 12v and asked "what are you powering with this? A 125 honda?" Which wasn't far off!
