If you haven't watched Black Sails I NEED you to know that when I say "season 1 is probably the weakest, but every season gets better from there", what I mean is: Season 1 of Black Sails is, even with a couple flaws and missteps, among the best seasons of television I have ever watched in my life. The only seasons of television which it is truly inferior to are the later seasons of Black Sails, and even then it is close.
Season 1 is a worthy inclusion in Black Sails. All (all) of the narrative threads that matter in S4 are present in S1, many of them in episode 1. Yes, at times it is tonally different from later seasons, but not noticeably (it also makes sense: the narrative stakes are not as high). Yes, there's that one storyline everyone hates but I'd say BS handled it (and certainly the stories that followed concerning this character) better than most.
Without S1 we wouldn't have fruit fruit tits tits plant plant. We must never forget that.
