Regarding the entire Jimin mess
ill start this off by saying that im an entire whitey, so feel free to ignore me and this post
--
this is in regards to this video and the term Jimin used to describe a tanned Jungkook in 2015 - a "kkamdeongi".
it was brought up by a user on twitter and this is what she said:
the user posted this, caused panic without researching and then left it all with an "oops"
this is what native speakers had followed this up with:
theres also a thread by this user who had gotten in contact with a native speaker and these are the key points i think should be noted;
however, each naver search of the term defines it as the korean version of the n word.
saying that however, as a native speaker of 2 languages i know terms in my own native language which mean 2 opposite things at the same time and only one is majorly defined online. its meaning and how offensive it is is heavily dependant on the context in which it is used.
given all of that, i do not believe that i have the right or that im in a position to tell black stans / black people in general to not be upset with Jimin or to not feel offended. its a term which i believe is ignorant and shouldnt be used and I dont believe Koreas ignorance and acceptance of such terms should be used as a way to dismiss Jimins actions, but it does put his decision to say what he said into context. I do hope that he apologizes for using the ignorant term, but i do not believe that he said the n word for one main reasons
Although Jimin and bts in general are ignorant to some extent and have shown antiblack behaviour in the past, after the way Namjoon was called out for saying the n word i dont think Jimin would be ignorant, insensitive and stupid enough to say it again - especially on camera while filming a vlog he knows for a fact will be uploaded onto the internet. He didnt say the "real" n word - as pointed out in the thread linked - but something ignorant and something that, I believe, can be seen as antiblack. His relationship with Jungkook should also be considered, as silly as that sounds. Jimin and Jungkook do tease eachother oncamera but Jimin had never been that malicious towards Jungkook. I think Jimins relationship with Tony on AHL and the many poc artists he listens to and the interviewer he seemed the most relaxed and engaged the most with should also be noted - but as a Jimin bias I acknowledge that the last few points are not me being completely objective.
