I’m making this post for the benefit of anyone who hasn’t bought MyAEW yet and is still considering if/when to switch over from Triller. I have not yet seen anyone mentioning the difficulties I’ve run into.
My friend and I both got it to watch Dynasty without the stream delay that Triller was going to have and we ran into three problems within that viewing:
1. There is a “streams” icon at the top of the webpage where the live video feed is displayed. This icon is what you click to choose your language. This icon remains on screen when you try to put the video in full-screen mode, causing there to be a dead border around the video like you’re back watching pirated mirrored Naruto on youtube.
Quick fix: right click the webpage, select Inspect, in the html search bar type relative flex flex, hit enter, then delete the portion of code that contains those words by clicking it (a small paragraph of text should appear to be highlighted blue) and hitting your delete button. Reloading the webpage undoes this action.
2. The spacebar on your laptop does not pause the feed, nor does clicking anywhere inside the video player. Play/Pause only works by clicking exactly on that icon in the bottom left (or if you have an inbuilt play/pause button on your keyboard, like my F10).
3. We started the stream 45 minutes late. Once the live event ended our video feed cut off. Reloading the webpage redirected us to the home page and we had to go find the PPV in the archive and resume from there. This happened to us again for Dynamite tonight but our delay was only 15 minutes, which was not enough time for the show to be up in the archive. We had to wait a WHILE until reloading the archive finally displayed our Dynamite for us to resume in the middle of Thekla’s promo.
My assumption for why Triller never did this to us is probably because the streams and the archive of those videos aren’t treated as completely separate entities that are hosted on different pages.
Additionally, the entire website and especially the home page are difficult and unintuitive to navigate. If you do buy MyAEW I suggest giving yourself about 20-30 minutes to figure out how to use it. Don’t sign up minutes before the show or ppv you intend to watch. (You would not believe how long it took me to figure out how to give them my money when I wanted to buy the ppv. You’d think that would be front and centre on the night of the ppv.)
Overall the UI is pretty shit and the structure supporting the streams is, let’s say, lacking. It feels very much like someone’s First Ever Website, a ‘someone’ who also seems to be trying to reinvent the wheel. Given that you cannot re-sign up for an AEW subscription on Triller now once you have cancelled it, I would caution against getting rid of it just yet. I am glad I held onto mine, and I’ve cancelled my subscription to MyAEW. I’ll check back in in a month or two to see if they’ve figured out how a video hosting website is meant to work.
