so there’s a rec list this week, but it’s a little different today. it’s @myaimistrue​‘s content creator celebration! del is a delightful person and great writer, so I’m happy to take part.

del’s prompt for this is the word comfort, and though I’m not a content creator in this fandom per se, I can rec the hell out of a list of my fave comfort fics.

The sun is bright, too bright, as its rays push past the flimsy blue curtains Dean hung up in their bedroom last week. It would have woken Cas up, if he hadn’t already been awake.

Some nights, he sinks into their bed with ease, grateful for all that he has. A house, a life, a family, peace, Dean beside him, wrapping his arms around him. But others, like last night, sleep never comes. Cas’ll drift off and his dreams will get consumed by blood and sacrifice and emptiness, and he’ll jolt awake, spend the rest of the night staring at the ceiling or watching Dean sleep, his face slack and peaceful. 

Other times he gets up to read, but he’s often loathe to leave the bed.

On the other side of the mattress, Dean shifts, stretching out an arm and slapping Cas’s waist. Cas takes his hand before Dean can pull it away, and Dean lifts his head off the pillow, slowly blinking at him. “You’re awake.”

Cas nods. Dean has sleep jammed into the corners of his eyes and his hair, which he’s gotten into the habit of letting grow a little bit longer, is sticking up, and he’s looking at Cas with this small, soft smile, and Cas loves him, loves him, loves him.

“You didn’t sleep again, did you?” Dean asks, rolling over to be closer to Cas, forcing Cas to release his hand. It’s alright, though, because a moment later the contact comes back in the form of Dean’s arms around him. 

“Not really, no.”

“Y’know you can wake me up when that happens, right?” 

Cas looks towards the ceiling, running one of his hands through Dean’s hair. He could wake up Dean, Dean’s offered dozens of times, but Cas thinks that he deserves rest after all this time. 

“I mean it.” Dean releases him and clambers on top of him, forcing an oof out of Cas.

“Get off.”

“Nope.” Dean buries his face in Cas’s neck. “M’gonna start sleeping like this so that I know when you wake up.”

Cas lets out what of a sigh he can with a full-grown man dead-weighted on top of him. “Okay, I’ll wake you up.”

“Good.” Dean rolls of of him and sits up, t-shirt wrinkled. He rubs at his eyes. “I’m going to make us coffee and then we’re gonna figure out we’re doing today, okay?”

“Okay.” Cas watches as Dean crosses the room, grabs his robe from the back of the door, and then pads down the hallway. About a minute later, he hears the coffee grinder, then the coffeemaker percolating, then Dean’s footsteps coming back up the hall. 

Dean leans against the doorframe. “Come help me make breakfast.”

Cas could snap back a snarky reply, something to make Dean laugh and come pull him out of the bed and kiss him, but instead he gets up, lets Dean loop an arm around his waist as they walk down the hallway, nearly burns the toast when Dean does pull him in for a kiss in front of the stove.

Some nights are bad, but at least there’s always this when he wakes up.
