Jack’s Bark and Bite!
This is going to be a series I will be doing to hold me accountable to my goals in helping my community!
There will be a tag called #MyBarkAndBite which anyone who wishes to help others may use to share their process and how it impacts people and encourage others to do the same! (including me! I want more ideas on how to help!) Now, I am scared of doing big things (out of fear of being harmed / killed) so I am trying to make small impacts and gain the courage to do bigger things! I will now share a past thing I did that I wish to bring back!
What was my BARK
Drawstrings with general (and sex specific) hygiene
What was this? Well when I was about 8 I started feeling hurt for those who weren’t fortunate enough to afford a place to live, so I told my mom I wanted to help (thankfully I have a very loving mother who also likes helping people (this was also rooted in religion but yours obviously doesn’t have to be!!)) she gave me some ideas and we built up this one: Give homeless people a drawstring bag filled with personal hygiene and a bottle of water because they are both super important, make sure that the products were free from all common allergens to avoid harming someone.
Simple!
What was the BITE
The bite was using money out of pocket and buying the things we needed to actually make this happen! We spoke to our church and a lot of kind people donated to help! We did NOT use ANY of that money for ourselves it all went to buying the things needed to continue it. After we got everything settled we spoke to a church that went out to feed the homeless people and made plans to meet with them and give our bags out while they passed out food.
This time I will buy POC specific hygiene items as well because the first time it was all generic stuff that only really worked with people who are white (not proud of that but I was also 8 and had no idea that POC had different hygiene needs) I am not too knowledgeable about what hygiene products POC need and would love any feedback on this!
My only problem with starting this is needing the money to actually start, we are in a less financially fortunate position where spare money is sparse.
