Field of Five Set for Inaugural Seattle Slew Stakes
Four decades after Seattle Slew swept the Triple Crown undefeated, he is finally getting a stakes race named after him.
The Seattle Slew Stakes is a restricted stakes for four year olds and up. The race will be run on dirt dirt at Belmont Park on Saturday, with a purse of $1000,000. The distance is 1 1/16 miles.
Comfort 6/5-The field is headlined by the Gr.I Whitney runner-up Comfort, a son of Indian Charlie (out of Unkatzable, by A.P. Indy), who is trained by Todd Pletcher. Comfort has a career record of 8:4-1-0, with his biggest win being the State Dinner Stakes. Comfort is also pointed towards the Gr.I Jockey Club Gold Cup.
Touchofstarquality 2/1- This six year old gelding by Mineshaft (out of Random Chance, by Red Ransom) ran second to Comfort in the State Dinner, and ran another runner-up effort in the Alydar Stakes last time out.
Baccelo 3/1- This Brazilian invader is a Group I winner back home, and he’s looking to add another stakes win to his record after winning the Gr.III Philip H. Iselin last time out for trainer David Jacobsen. The gelding is by Northern Afleet, out of Quanto Carina (BRZ), by Wild EVent.
Tapin Mojo 20/1- The longest shot on the bird, this former claimer ran fifth in the Woodward last time out for trainer Naipaul Chatterpaul. Tapin Mojo is by champion sire Tapit, out of Midday Runner, by Real Quiet.
Mylute 10/1- Rounding out the field is multiple grades stakes placed and former Triple Crown contender Mylute, who was third in the Alydar last time out. The dark gray six year old son of Midnight Lute (out of Stage Stop, by Valid Expectations) is the most experienced horse in the field, with a record of 29:5-5-6. All of his wins have come in Allowances, save for a MSW. With earnings of over $900,00, Mylute looks to become racing’s newest millionaire for trainer Ralph Nicks.
