Explorer’s journal, day 11: A strange and exciting discovery today! This intricate device is mounted on a wall in what appears to have been a local eating establishment. The purpose of the central circle is unknown, as it seems to be broken - it rotates but returns to the original position once released. The curved object on the side hangs somewhat loosely, but remains attached to the main body via a curled cord. The advice to “listen for a dial tone” is if no use - after an hour if listening carefully we heard only silence. Was this device some sort of alarm, or a method for patrons to order their food? We may never know.
