There's another true albino humpback whale! Her name is Siale, she was first spotted in August last year, but I just recently learned about her, and am very excited. I also think that it was just recently confirmed she is a true albino.

She and Migaloo are the only albino humpback whales off the east coast of Australia.

Unfortunately people are concerned because she looks quite thin, but hopefully everything turns out okay.

“Diversity”

Compared to other groups of animals, there aren’t all that many mammal species. But Cetacea, the order of the whales, with its mere 80-90 species is unusually small, even by mammal standards; primates for example have almost 400 species, and the order of the rodents has about 2200! And yet, despite their small numbers, there is such an incredible diversity between the whales, from the big and mighty bowhead whale to the small and sleek harbour porpoise. Not only do the depicted species illustrate this broad diversity in shapes and sizes, they also occur in a single geographical location for at least part of their ranges.

This is a really old drawing, but I still quite like it!

Cetacean species spotlight:

Bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus)

The bowhead whale is endemic to Arctic waters, and the only Mysticete known to reside there year-long. They have the largest mouth of any animal, and use their huge skulls to break through ice. Bowhead whales have the longest baleen plates of any whale. They are confirmed to be able to live more than 200 years. Bowhead whales are globally recognized as Least Concern, though three population stocks are Vulnerable or Endangered.

I feel a distinct connection to these whales, and I must admit that they are my favorite Mysticetes.
