people have pointed out before that el, mike, and will each take one of the three doors we learn about in episode 4 (take your own life, accept your fate, escape) in the finale and "epilogue", but if you're an enjoyer of conformitygate it's a more accurate comparison than what you get taking that in-show bullshit at face-value

because max specifically says that these are the doors available to someone stuck in a fake evil world, someplace not real, and if the ending is vecna's creation (i.e it's not real) then those doors still exist. like a dream in a dream.

now granted, unless you start his creation before el dies she's still gone. and even if you brought her back in the false vision.. that still leaves her with door 1. if we're sticking to the three doors, one for each person thing. obviously not ideal but that's what i'm talking about right now. so this has nothing to do with el (maybe i'll pretend to be a duffer brother and make up a nonsensical way for her to come back. or we can do a plot twist of 'ha ha she actually avoided her door! this whole time!! how?? don't worry about it)

so

you have mike and will who we think have chosen their doors, except they didn't actually choose anything. they're stuck.

mike, if he was made aware of this, probably wouldn't settle for choosing the fate shown unless he thought there wasn't a better option for him. or he thought he didn't deserve anything better (which i think is how he feels) the mike we see with his glasses and his typewriter is tired and depressed and has given up on most of life. learning it was all fake and he could try and find a way out, i think at that point he'd just be done. indifferent. like 'i'm stuck here? okay. so what. it's not like there's anything better on the other side of this?? and i can't fight again, especially not alone'

unless will, who "escaped" the first layer and has the real escape door available to him, breaks him out of it. gives him hope. like holly did for max. because that puts door three on the table for more than one person.

will, despite "defeating vecna", still feels a connection to the hivemind, though it's muted. distant. he tries to ignore it and how things don't always seem to make sense around him once he starts paying attention. he can't remember what happened after their fight in the abyss. how did he end up in a gay bar talking to some guy that looks a lot like mike (he's not as cute tho lbr)? why is he even in a gay bar?? he wouldn't go to a bar.

it takes some time but he fights whatever is keeping him under and he realizes nothing is real. they didn't win. and now he has to find out what actually happened. where everyone else is.

starting with mike

who is thankfully easy to find bc that motherfucker didn't leave hawkins (edit: he may have ended up going to a college actually, but even if he did that doesn't really change anything in this post. just that when will finds mike it might be somewhere different lmao i stand by mike being depressed. as someone with severe depression that boy is one of us alright. and him maybe going to school doesn't mean he's fine or that he doesn't try to kill himself)

maybe will finds a way to make his connection to the hivemind louder again, to tap back in and spy, and because its been so long and this fake reality is so vast vecna doesn't notice. at least not at first.

maybe will just has a gut feeling that mike gave himself the saddest fucking ending because he knows mike

however he figures it out, he gets to mike back in hawkins (or wherever) and goes about trying to convince him of the truth. trying to convince him to take door three with him, so they can find the others.

while will is figuring all this out btw i think mike 'lets jump off a cliff with minimal hesitation at 12' wheeler has probably done just that again. repeatedly. he's probably tried to end his life in multiple ways if its really been so long. but though he "dies" he doesn't actually die. because this isn't real. vecna "resets" him like you would a doll. because mike was the "accept your fate" door. and you can't kill yourself out of the fate of a miserable life. that would end the misery. can't have that. mike doesn't remember any of these attempts because the reset "erases" it

it happens at intervals of uncountable time because it's a timeless hellscape, but maybe will shows up during one of these attempts and breaks mike out of it. maybe it's just a random day when mike's staring at the painting on his wall and trying to pretend he feels nothing about the boy he still loves and will shows up on his doorstep. poor mike would be confused either way, and it would be a very complicated and messy conversation i think

but because i am a byler first, person second, he does eventually agree to do whatever will asks him to so they can leave together. so they can be together in whatever the real world looks like.

it won't be easy to get through that door, it won't be easy to fix any of this or to actually defeat vecna, but at least they're together again and through the power of homosexual love all things are possible

and everybody is saved and they wake up in their bodies either during season 5 episode 7, while will was trapped in the upside down, or episode 8 during the "final battle", and it turns out they were all knocked out and mentally taken over during the battle with vecna and the mind flayer.

but now they're back. and you can't really completely kill a cosmic horror like the mind flayer, but you can kill vecna and you can get back through the upside down and blow it up so the mind flayer can't hurt anyone ever again (until scientists inevitably decide to play a game of 'fuck around and find out')

do they all remember what happened in the 18ish month dream hellscape?? some do, some don't. depends on how much angst you want. i for one think mike and will definitely remember, but it's because they were more.. main players. they had more of vecna's focus, since will was his vessel and mike was the one person who could bring will back outside of will himself. they were also the only ones with the doors. the others wouldn't have been able to escape without at least will. so it's kinda like they were npcs?? but not quite??

and yeah

they all get a happy ending

2. i dont think he ever said he was (not that there would be anything wrong with it if he did, you antisemitic assclown) he was seen with people he didn't really know as they were showing him stuff they had made. it was pro-zionism and anti-hamas stickers, specifically. nothing actually bad. but he did a whole-ass explanation AND apology because he got attacked so badly over it (which he shouldn't have had to do or experience) he supported israel but made his stance for peace on both sides known at that time too. that should've been the end of it.
