MoT Spotlight On: Doctoral Candidate Li Sumpter | mythmedia:21
Museum of Time Presentation:
mythmedia:21 is a production studio dedicated to developing projects that use the power of myth and media technologies to address critical inquiry and cultural concerns of the 21st century. We believe today’s cultural milieu and its underlying mythology serve as the blueprint for the world of tomorrow. The visual landscape is essential to this blueprint. As catalysts of culture throughout history, artists have been the world’s architects of image, ideology and change. mythmedia:21 sees artists and media-makers as messengers of the age heralding undeniable signs of the times.
Currently a doctoral student in Mythological Studies and Depth Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute, Sumpter’s research applies archetypal, aesthetic and quantum theories toward understanding humankind’s existential condition in the 21st century. She believes our future trajectory through the multi-verse is fundamentally shaped by collective participation in a mythic paradigm that supports a corresponding reality. In her dissertation, Apocalyptic Soul: Seeing through Image in the Age of End Time Sumpter examines the impact of apocalyptic art and media on psyche and the phenomenological world.
While Afrofuturism continues to be defined and re-defined by cultural trend and technology, Sumpter considers it, above all, an archetypal aesthetic. In the timeless quest for survival, meaning and transcendence, Afrofuturism is but one path of critical interpretation, creative expression and existential meditation bringing people of the African Diaspora closer to a multi-dimensional vision of tomorrow and humanity’s place in the cosmos.
