I think we forget how jarring the modern world can be. With its new shapes, and shapes perverted, reimagined. All general form redone. We live at a time where there is an expressed need to reject the traditional for all it represents. Could you imagine how horrifying that would be for somebody like Finn? Somebody who not only was absent for the birth of the traditional, but also the birth of the modern. All those protests and scandals that inspired change. All that missed history, missed context, evolution. This moving onto the next thing. How can you engage with a novel, a book, a piece of art, the shape of certain pieces of furniture, the very English language, when each aspect of it has been protested and challenged and stretched and inverted and is still continued to be so? We don't notice it, but our worlds are full of so much context. We say things without saying them. Certain phrases are loaded, politically, sexually. How does a sycophant like Finn cope?? How does someone whose survival has always been so dependent on word-play, manipulation and weaponised communication, rise to the top? How do you catch up with the rest of the world, when it seems so determined to unravel itself. So determined to forward by moving backwards by not moving at all. What does this Machiavellian man do to survive? What does Finn do when he is born again to a world that has moved on from his time in a million different inconceivable different ways?
