Growing Up Digital - The Rise of the Net Generation - Don Tapscott
Unless the boomers have a change of heart about youth, their culture, and their media, the two biggest generations in history may be on a collision course - a battle of the generational titans. An older generation, mistrustful and threatened by new ideas and new tools, will be pitted against a new generation increasingly resentful at attempts to curtail its growth and rights. Fear, especially when based on lack of knowledge, can get in the way of effective parenting, appropriate government policy, and sound business decisions. We must become unafraid so that we can understand. We must understand so that we may lose our fear. The digital media is increasingly a reflection of our world - every view, every discipline, every commercial interest, every repository of knowledge. Because it is distributed, interactive, malleable, and lacking central control, it is a vehicle for revolutionary change in every discipline, attitude, and social structure. Never has there been a time of greater promise or peril. The challenge of achieving that promise, and in so doing save our fragile planet, will rest with the Net Generation. Our responsibilities are to them - to give them the tools and opportunity to fulfill their destinies. We also have an unparalleled opportunity to learn from them for personal and business success and for social development. The people, companies, and nations which succeed in the new economy will be those who listen to their children. We can listen to their views on the world. We can learn from their effortless mastery and application of tools. By listening and responding to their frustrations of being denied adequate tools and support, we can envision and enact the new partnerships required for a new age. Read on.
