Sobre todo cuando los rayos iluminaban el cielo nocturno. Su imaginación manifestaba la silueta de algo entre las nubes. Al acercarse casi al epicentro del caos, se alzaba frente al navío un colosal reptil con cuernos, cuello largo y alas membranosas, que emitía un rugido que formaba parte de los truenos. “ÉL” era la misma tempestad. Así fue que cada uno de ellos, a su manera pensaban, «¿qué es un rey para un dios?» ...

In Mapuche mythology, Ngen are nature spirits that govern and protect various aspects of the natural world. They were created by the Pu-am, the universal soul in Mapuche beliefs. If one wishes to take something from nature, they must leave an offering for the Ngen spirit.

There are dozens of specific Ngen, managing various natural features. They include; Ngen-mapu, owners of the Earth; Ngen-kütral, owners of fire; Ngen-ko, owners of water; Ngen-kürüf, owners of the winds; Ngen-mawida, owner of the forest; and Ngen-kulliñ, owner of the animals.
