So I've been Playing.... Tetris (N3TWORK 2020)
Oh boy starting the year not only a month late but with a mobile game!!
So I've been playing Tetris and I have somethings to say. Have you ever had something like a TV show you have to make yourself not watch or a game you have to force yourself to not play because if you do you just don't ever stop? Tetris is that game for me. I love Tetris it's named as one of the greatest games of all time for good reason not only has it sold over 500 million copies its been a staple of gaming since the dawn of time. Plus theme A is one of the most recognisable videogame songs ever and don't lie we all love it.
I have been playing Tetris since I was a small on my trusty GBA it was one of the few games I used to play with my dad, we would spend hours trying to beat each others highscores one of us always falling short just by a couple of hundred points. I have owned Tetris in some form on every handheld I had as a kid be it my GBA, DS, 3DS or most recently the switch with Tetris 99. As you can imagine when I had the brilliant idea to search the play store and found the EA Tetris for mobile it became my number one time killer, every waiting room or bus stop became way more exciting with the promise of Tetris just waiting to be played. Sadly EA's Tetris is shutting down this year so it will soon be time to say farewell to my sweet sweet mobile gaming love. But that's where N3twork swooped in to save the day with Tetris 2020!
The second I saw Tetris 2020 I downloaded it and got to playing but I instantly had issues with it. It controls the same as EA's Tetris swiping left and right moves the tetrominoes, swiping down slams the tetromino down, tapping rotates and either swiping up or tapping the hold box puts the tetromino in hold. It's simple effective and a whole lot of fun. I mean its Tetris it's pretty hard to mess up how it controls.
Tetris 2020 comes with some built-in skins and visually they all look pretty great. The default is all spacey, one is a chalkboard in a kids room and my personal favourite is simple just bold colours on a dark background. The skins seem like a great idea on paper but they don't work all that well in practice. With most of the skins, it's so hard to see where your tetrominoes are going to land because you just can't see the ghost it's just grained out by the backgrounds making every game way more of a challenge than it needs to be I know a lot of people that struggle with Tetris so not being able to see really won't help a beginner. On top of that, every skin changes the music so you might love the skin but hate the song that plays!! JUST LET ME HEAR THEME A!!!
Honestly, I don't hate the skins too much to me it adds a little extra challenge to the start of every game and I'm okay with that but not everyone will be. I did find one thing I think is a little unfair. You have so little time to adjust your tetrominoes when they touch the floor, it's pretty much instant that the game just stops you in your tracks and just forces you to move on to the next one while you hope you can recover. The EA Tetris gave you way more leeway to make sure everything was lined up how you wanted it and that made the game flow smoother, it didn't add an extra layer of panic when you hit level 14 for the first time like in Tetris 2020. This could just be an issue for me because I'm not a Tetris god but it would be nice just to have that extra couple of seconds so I don't feel like the game is fighting against me all the time.
Other than those small gripes and that honestly what they are the Tetris 2020 is one hell of a way to play Tetris, it feels nice (most of the time), it looks great and well it's Tetris you can't go wrong.
