Spelman rising sophomore recipient of $1,500 scholarship

This week’s Buddy Scholar is Simone Stinnette of Spelman College. Simone is a rising sophomore, biology major, from Austin, Tex.

After earning her degree, she plans to obtain her MD and then a PhD in Public Health.  

At Spelman, she is a member of PULSE: Programming for a Unique and Lively Spelman Experience and a Student Ambassador. In the Atlanta Community, she volunteers at KIPP WAYS Primary School where she helps tutor 5th grade students in science.

She lives by the scripture: Philippians 4:8.

About the Buddy Scholarship

The Buddy Scholarship is named after Tom Joyner’s mother, the late Buddy Joyner, who was a strong supporter of higher education. To be a candidate for the scholarship, students must be female, attend a Foundation “School of the Month”, have a grade point average of at least 3.5, and be a campus leader involved in the community with a career goal toward making a difference in the quality of life for her race. The scholars each receive a scholarship grant of $1,500 that is paid directly to their school to help offset their college expenses.

Freshman recipient of Buddy Scholarship

The last Tom Joyner Foundation Buddy Scholar for the month of January is Brittany Butler. Brittany is a freshman, Pre-law major, from Baton Rouge, La. 

Brittany's future aspiration is to pursue a career in criminal justice with a specialty in psychology. At Spelman, she is a member of Beyond Curves, where she mentors and supports her follow Spelman sisters. Brittany's community involvements include being a college fellow through the Baton Rouge Youth Coalition and a youth professional as part of the Sexual Trauma Awareness & Response as a 3-D Peer Educator.  

She lives by the motto, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you"

Sophomore recipient of Buddy Scholarship

This week's Tom Joyner Foundation Buddy Scholar is Amber Hobbs. Amber is a sophomore, political science major, from Southfield, Mich.  

This aspiring television producer hopes to one day be able to create her own show informing others about national and global politics using a non-bias platform. Her campus involvements include, vice-president of the sophomore class, event chair of the Atlanta University Center Michigan Club, Spelman College Student Ambassador, and a member of TigerTV.

She lives by the motto, "Nothing will work, unless you do" - Maya Angelou.

Sophomore recipient of Buddy Scholarship

Our second Tom Joyner Foundation Buddy Scholar is Camille Zoe Swinson.

Camille is a sophomore, international studies major, Spanish minor, from Washington, D.C.  

At Spelman, Camille is actively involved. She is a member of the Model United Nations, the National Society for Collegiate Scholars, and Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society. Her future aspiration is to pursue her masters in International Relations in a Spanish speaking country. 

She lives by the motto, “In order to fly, you must fall”.

National Alumnae Association of Spelman College named January school of the month

The Tom Joyner Foundation January 2015 school of the Month is the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College (NAASC). During the month of January, the Foundation will focus its efforts on raising scholarship funds to support scholars attending Spelman. 

Funds raised during the partnership will be allocated to the NAASC Donald and Isabel Stewart Endowed Scholarship Fund at Spelman College, which provides annual scholarships to students and is administered by the College.
