9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?

Only one fic of mine had an alternate version and it’s one for which I regret switching from my original plan. I learned from that experience that other people’s opinions are valid, but to keep to my vision unless there is a canon reason not to. I urge all writers to do the same.

Note: A few times, I’ve added on to a story because of comments or requests. I love that. I love that so much.

How I feel about this character: He is my baby and I will protect him. ...okay but in all seriousness I liked him as a kid, it was reassuring to see someone with social anxiety issues sort of like mine, then when I started to write him I fell in love with him and now he’s possibly my favorite character ever. I relate to him in a very personal way.

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: In canon, it’s the one that’s barely explored: Reg and Lewis Zimmerman. It’s an unexpected friendship, but I totally see how it works and it’s fascinating. For this blog, I adore Reg and D’rorah (written by @drorah-walks). It’s the ultimate father/daughter relationship, they are so sweet together.

My unpopular opinion about this character: It feels like most people think Reg was fucking people in the holodeck and I just... no. He wasn’t. He wasn’t fucking copies of the crew, he wasn’t, noooooooo

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I’d just like more of him tbh.

Favorite friendship for this character: As I said above, Reg and Zimmerman. Also Reg and Deanna, and Reg and Pete.

My crossover ship: Ohhhh I can really, really get behind Reg/Alara. As in Alara Kitan, from The Orville.

◑ - What is a side to your muse you want to show off, but haven’t had the chance to yet?

I want to see overprotective Reg. Like… when someone he cares about is in danger and he is absolutely furious and ready to fuck shit up to keep them safe. I need it. I need it in my life. (Especially if it’s a verse where he has kids and it’s overprotective furious dad Reg.)

✄ - What is an idea you originally had in mind for your muse, but ended up scrapping? Why?

I was thinking for a while that Reg spent his entire childhood on Earth, but now I’m digging the idea of StarFleet kid Reg being pulled from assignment to assignment with his mother. It seems more fitting than saying his mother managed to keep one post for 17 years. So he lived on Earth as a little kid, then again as a teenager, but in between he was on a starbase and a starship.

So I’m kinda building up to this in my group verse, which is mostly on Discord, but more things relating to Reg’s holo-addiction, whether that’s just him discussing it really frankly or him having a full-blown relapse. It’s a major part of his character that I mention but don’t really explore much, and I’d like to have it treated more seriously as an addiction and not an “eww Reg is so gross making out with Deanna” thing. Or even worse as a comedic thing, obviously there’s some elements of comedy to be found in it but overall it’s not meant to be terribly funny.

When Reg met Liz as a kid, he very excitedly brought her home to meet his mother and sister. Alicia had an instant dislike of her, which only got worse finding out she was a foster kid. She made it very clear that she never wanted Reg to see that horrible orphan girl ever again... so Reg kept seeing her behind his mother’s back. She was his only friend, after all.

As teenagers, Reg and Liz had to sneak around to have sex. Reg’s sister completely walked in on them once, and on more than one occasion Liz had to climb out the window half-dressed or hide under the bed before Alicia walks in.

Reg actually learns how to fight in this AU, and can even hold his own against Liz. Though he knows how to use knives and even a bat’leth, he prefers a phaser, which has a stun setting. His own phaser is tweaked to look like it’s set to kill when it’s actually on stun (for intimidation purposes).

Literally no one suspects Reg is a smuggler. Liz, maybe, but Reg just seems so polite and awkward and sweet, he can’t possibly be doing anything illegal. People just want to trust him. Reg and Liz use this to their advantage a lot.

Reg has sort of figured out how to weaponize his own anxiety. If there’s a conflict, he won’t hide how scared he is and will make himself look as weak and non-threatening as possible. Then, when people underestimate him, he can jump on them when they least expect it.

Of all Reg’s verses and AUs, this is the one where he is the best fighter. He sort of has to be. He used to get picked on a lot, so his sister taught him to stand up for himself.

Reg’s mother is one of the Terrans working with the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance to keep the rest of her race enslaved. She tried to send Reg to Terok Nor as a worker, but Jax figured out what she was planning and warned him. Reg killed his mother and the two siblings left Earth to join the Terran resistance.

Jax is dead. She was killed on what was supposed to be a simple recon mission. Reg did not handle it well.

Reg has figured out how to speak without a stammer. He has to really focus on what he’s saying to do this, so he’s a man of few words. When he does talk, it’s very controlled and quiet.

Reg has a cat that goes everywhere with him. Her name is Primrose (Prim for short) and she hates absolutely everyone else and won’t let you near Reg unless he says it’s okay.

💍- your most underrated story

This is a fascinating question, @nab999, and I scrolled back through all my works to try to answer it. I looked at the metrics and considered alternate types of attention such as publication in a fanzine or other praise. I also kept in mind expectations for various parings, characters, ratings, and endings (since sad or twisty endings don’t get kudos the way happy endings do).

And, man, I just don’t know. I definitely have fics that I wish got more attention, but the lack of engagement for those seems fair under the expectations of fanfic. Not that I’m satisfied, because I always want more kudos and nice comments (on account of the somewhat-needy writerly ego liking to be petted), but … yeah. Everything seems in order, even when stories aren’t as popular as I might wish.

I’d like to explore the hologram fight for independence that’s teased in “Author, Author.”

I’m interested in a series of Earth-centric reunions — some romantic, some not — for each member of the Voyager senior staff.

I’m interested in a post-Endgame Kathryn Janeway/Mark Johnson/Carla Johnson relationship of equals that brings them all happiness.

I’ve also tried off and on to get Kathryn Janeway/Rudy Ransom to work, and I still think there’s something to the deep similarities and stark differences between those two.

I think that’s the back burner, for now! Some or all of those may never happen, but they’re percolating.
