Are you a high school student who likes puzzles and/or language? Do you know one?
We’re heading into the time of year to participate in one of many national linguistics olympiads! (Generally mid-Jan to mid-March)
Find your country on the International Linguistics Olympiad website and follow the links to participate!
Olympiade Linguistique Canadienne
Thus July, the International Linguistics Olympiad (a problem-solving competition aimed at secondary school students) will be held in Dublin. Since I’ve been helping a bit to organize the French half of this year′s Canadian Linguistics Olympiad -- which leads directly into the international event -- I figured I’d share some of the relevant details here, in case you (or someone you know) might be interested in participating!
So, if you like riddles, love language, or just really need to get to Ireland, be sure to share this advert!
On Thursday, January 19th, there’ll be an info session at l’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), with the competition itself happening at the end of this month. No previous training is needed, but a love of puzzles definitely helps!
Hope to see you there! ^_^
Just posting this ref sheet here no reason at all hey btw by the way did you know I have an Artfight account?
Sorry that it's not aligned correctly but do you understand my vision?
Original post
The International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) is a contest for students up to secondary school level where they compete in solving problems based in the scientific study of languages - linguistics. The contest does not involve knowing lots of languages.
Are you a high school student who likes language or logic puzzles? Do you know one who does?
Check out the linguistics olympiads! No prior knowledge is assumed, and it’s a cool way to learn more about how languages work, meet other nerds, and potentially have something cool to put on your university application.
The international competition is happening in July in Prague, but the national olympiads that qualify you for the international one are coming up very soon!
North America - January 25
UK - February
Australia - March
Many other countries can be found on the International Linguistics Olympiad website, and if yours isn’t on there, they’re expanding every year and always open to new enthusiasts.
To get a sense of what the linguistics olympiad is like, you can check out an archive of past problems and their solutions on the IOL website:
Start with the samples if you're new to IOL problems and when you're ready take a stab at our past problems. If you've done all those and can't get enough, the national olympiads below also keep archives of past problems.
Test 1: AgX + NaClO
is this anything?
