The Canadian Nationals seem a little overshadowed by the US Nationals (which could be because their Senior events start later) but there’s lots of drama to be seen here.
Of course I’ll be watching the ice dance to see Piper & Paul and Marjorie and Zach’s send off to the Olympics, but I think the really ‘ones to watch’ are some of the lower ranked teams. I would love to see Hensen and Lickers have their breakout performance. They have two fantastic programs this year (particularly the free dance) and I think they can bring the house down if they skate them well. I’d love to see them get a spot at 4CCs.
And there’s the question of whether Nadiia and partner or Peter and partner will come out on top. I’m Team Nadiia - I like their music and their movement style.
Beyond ice dance, I’m looking forward to pairs (please Deanna and Max have a lights out skate!). I think the most interesting fight for the Olympic spot will be men’s. Will it be Roman, who’s dominated these last few years and had a good season? Stephen who always had the potential, but seems to finally be injury free this year? Keegan who has been lacklustre in his big return?
As much as I like Sara-Maude, I think Maddie will get the women’s spot. She has the history. I don’t think Skate Canada will take a chance, particularly where they have an outside chance at a Team Event medal.
My guess at the team is:
- Dance - G/P, L/L, L/lG
- Pairs - SD/D, P/M
- Ladies - Maddie
- Men - Roman
It’s going to be a fun weekend!
