Sweat drips from your brow as you lay sprawled on the ground, groaning in pain. "Am I dying? I feel like I'm dying..."
Valko hovers over you, concern shining bright in his eyes. His phone is pressed to his ear. "Doc, you better hurry. We need you."
"No, don't call Zayne for this," you gasp, trying to sit up.
Valko presses a hand to your chest. "It's too late, pancake. He's already coming."
You groan, flopping back down without much more protest. "I can't...."
Valko looks up, wolf ears swiveling on his head. Tracking.
"Why is she on the floor?" Caleb's face joins Valko's, hovering over you with concern. He wore a deep frown, his brow furrowed with irritation.
You smile, weak but glad to see him. "Caleb."
Valko crosses his arms. "She punched me in the nose when I tried to pick her up."
Caleb scoops you up despite your groans that you were sweaty and it hurt. "I don't care if she claws at you or bites one of your fuzzy little ears off. Pick her up," he says to the wolf.
Caleb sets you gently on the couch, then hurries to get you some water and an ice pack. "Sit tight, ok?"
You nod wearily, your head pounding.
"Try to take better care of her," he says pointedly to Valko as he walks away.
Valko sighs at being scolded like a naughty child, but ignores him. His focus is all on you, golden eyes gleaming like an adorable wolf pup. "Are you ok?"
You muster up a smile for him, nodding your head. "I'm ok."
Valko frowns, ears twitching. No doubt detecting your lie.
"Don't listen to her," a familiar voice calls from the door. "She's a patient who lies all the time."
You perk up as Zayne comes to sit next to you on the couch. In full doctor mode as he checks your vitals.
"Hi," you say as his pretty green eyes meet yours.
Zayne sighs through his nose at you, but smiles for you anyway. He looked rumpled. Tie askew, hair messy. He had rushed over in record time to come check on you.
So sweet.
"You," Zayne mutters with fond exasperation.
You grunt as he pinches your nose. "Zayne!"
Zayne slumps by your side, half sprawled on the floor. "Don't scare me like that again," he says gently, his voice heavy with emotion.
"I told Valko not to call," you mumble, glancing to the sheepish looking wolf hovering nearby.
"It's just... her heart was beating so fast. It sounded... off," Valko mumbles, his tail limp and his wolf ears drooping with guilt. "Sorry."
You feel your heart pang at his cuteness. "No, I'm sorry. I shouldn't blame you. You were just worried for me."
Zayne hums, holding your wrist to monitor your pulse. "She overexerted herself again. All she needs is rest, fluids, and something to eat."
You make a noncommittal sound in your throat, enjoying Zayne's cooling touch too much to muster up any sort of argument.
Mm, so cool.
"Thanks, doc," Valko says with relief, reaching out to squeeze Zayne's shoulder. "You're a real one."
Zayne smiles at him, green eyes rolling at his long-time friend. "Of course. I care for both of you. Why wouldn't I come?"
Caleb returns, spots Zayne, and tosses the ice pack aside.
"Just in time, Caleb," Zayne says, grabbing the cool drink from his hand before the other man can protest.
"Zayne," Caleb greets, turning his attention to helping you sit up and fluffing your pillows.
You sip from the glass as Zayne offers it. "Play nice, boys."
"We are," Caleb says with a not-so-nice smile. "I'm not using my evol, am I?"
Zayne nods. "Indeed not. I suspect he acts quite well behaved for you," the doctor adds, chilling your glass with one hand as he soothes your sweaty forehead with the other.
"Caleb," You warn.
Caleb jerks his pointer finger at him, making a face. "Why are you warning me? He's trying to pick a fight. I could toss him into Deepspace."
Zayne spares him an unimpressed glance. "I could freeze you before you tried. A Caleb ice-block of her very own."
You sigh.
Valko comes to you with one glance, his ears perked.
Zayne gives a small noise of complaint as the wolf crowds close to him, caging the doctor in against the couch to get close to you.
"I'm sorry you're caught in the middle of all this," you say to Valko, offering him your hand.
Zayne, the one caught between the both of you, arches his eyebrows.
Valko shakes his head, tucking his cheek into your hand and nuzzling your wrist. You watch his nose rapidly twitch, the wolf taking in your scent.
"I don't care, they can fight like cats and dogs so long as you're alright," he heaves a sigh of relief as you stroke his ears.
"Cats and dogs?" Zayne quirks a brow. "Am I the cat, then?"
Caleb scoffs. "You're the dog, Valko."
Valko bares his teeth at him, ears pinned to his head and tail bristling. "I'm a wolf. Don't know the difference? Idiot."
Caleb flexes his wrist, giving him the middle finger.
You groan, tugging Zayne's wrist so his palm covered your eyes. "Everybody shut up, I have a headache."
Zayne nods. Pushing Valko aside so he could breathe without the wolf pinning him against the couch. "Yes, do be quiet, children."
Caleb smiles and flips Zayne off, too. "He's not worth my time, anyhow."
Valko adjusts as Zayne shoves at his chest, shifting to the other side of the doctor so he could half lay on your lap.
Valko curls his lip and snorts. "Whatever."
The wolf entirely smug as you pat his head as he rests his chin on your lap.
You roll your eyes, dragging Zayne's hand away from your face as he gestures for you to drink more.
"At least Xavier and Sylus are both busy," you mumble.
Then, with a spike of anxiety that makes Valko's nose twitch, you ask, "Nobody told Rafayel, did they?"
Zayne chuckles. "No, but I suspect you'll be in for a scolding later. Besides, you don't need all of your boyfriends hovering around you and fussing for this. You'll be fine."
"That's a relief," You say with a smile. Though you were dreading the long-winded scolding Rafayel was sure to give you. He did have a flair for the dramatic.
You clear your throat, changing the subject. "Since I've had my checkup... Can I have something sweet now, doctor?" You bat your eyelashes, smiling innocently.
"Yes," Zayne reaches in his pocket for a piece of chocolate. Then another as Valko meets his eyes with a fanged grin.
Caleb watches, then turns his face away as Zayne looks at him. "I'm not a kid, I don't need chocolate."
Valko's tail wags a mile a minute as Zayne unwraps the chocolate and pops it in your mouth.
"I was talking about a kiss," you say as the chocolate melts on your tongue.
"I want a chocolate and a kiss," Valko says, ever so honest and eager in his affection.
You laugh, cup his face in your hands and kiss him with the taste of chocolate still melting in your mouth.
Valko shivers, groaning as he kisses you. "More."
Zayne flicks him. "No."
Valko pouts at him, opening his mouth to complain, but promptly closing it as Zayne pops a chocolate in his mouth. "Mmf."
Another chocolate sails through the air, and Caleb snatches it before it can hit his head.
He eats it, offering no thanks.
Zayne shrugs, unbothered.
"I feel better already," you sigh, sinking into the pillows.
Caleb pokes your head. "Of course you do."
Zayne smiles gently, stroking your hair. "Chocolate and kisses will do that."
You pucker your lips, reaching for all of them. "Give me more. Kisses and chocolate!"
Your phone rings then, and Caleb fetches it for you. You glance over to see "Fishie" flashing across your screen.
"Who told Rafayel?" You gasp, "Don't!" But cannot stop Caleb before he hits accept.
"Cuuuuutiiiieee," Rafayel cries through the phone. "Why am I always the last to hear about things like this! Caleb texted me and spilled everything! This isn't fair, you're favoring that new wolf of yours over me!"
Valko's ears perk, his golden eyes gleaming. Smug.
You poke his forehead, rolling your eyes. All of these men were exhausting. They were damn lucky that you loved each and every one of them.
"Are you listening to me?" Rafayel asks on the other end, in that tone of voice that spelled a long winded rant oncoming. "You didn't put me on mute again, did you?"
Zayne laughs, and offers you another chocolate as Valko burrows his head in your lap with his ears pressed flat.
You sigh, stroking Valko's ears. "I'm listening, I promise. I'm soooo sorry, Rafayel. You know I love you, don't you?"
Rafayel gives a disbelieving harrumph. "You don't act like it! You should call me first, you're my bodyguard!"
You sigh, accepting the phone as Caleb hands it to you with a toothy grin.
"You're a big meanie, Caleb," you whisper to him.
Caleb winks. "This is your just desserts, pipsqueak. We're calling Sylus and Xavier next."
You groan, flopping back amongst the pillows.
You really had too many boyfriends. And now they were all teaming up against you.
A smile curls your lips even as you look at the three men surrounding you, the fourth on the phone still scolding you. The other two next in line to hear the tale of your greatly exaggerated almost demise.
Well, it wasn't a tale of tragedy and woe, being so loved.
They loved you, and you loved all of them.
You couldn't be happier, even with your favorite fishie scolding you like this.
"I love you so much," you say, cutting Rafayel off mid rant.
Said into the phone, but meeting the eyes of the men crowding around you and thinking your neighbor-slash-hunter-partner, and the leader of onychinus who was probably napping at this time of day.
Rafayel pauses, then makes a sound of annoyance. "You're not playing fair, cutie. So I'm making this a conference call."
You gasp. "Nooo, Rafayel!"
Your phone beeps, once, twice.
Then Sylus' tired voice comes through, "Kitten, there better be a good enough reason why that fish of yours called me during the daytime like this."
Xavier chimes in, his voice soft but stern, the shrieking of a wanderer in the background. "I'm in the middle of a mission, but Rafayel just texted me. Is that wolf of yours pushing you so hard that you almost fainted, my star?"
You feel put on the spot, and then sink into the pillows. "It's not Valko's fault, I pushed myself too hard. Zayne, will you take the phone? My head hurts."
Zayne levels you with a knowing look, but takes the phone anyway. His lips brush your cheek, granting you the kiss you had asked for earlier. "Yes, hello, this is Zayne. Yes... I'll fill you in on everything."
Valko peeks at you from your lap, looking guilty.
You press a finger to your lips, winking. "I'm ok, I promise. I just don't want to get scolded."
Zayne meets your gaze, pressing a finger to his lips.
Caleb crosses his arms. "I should have expected you'd use Zayne to get out of your punishment. Clever girl."
You sniff. "Zayne is nice to me, unlike you. Caleb, you big meanie!"
Caleb sighs. "Ah, well. If I'm such a meanie, then I guess you're not hungry, huh?"
Your stomach growls at the mention of food, so loud that Valko lifts his head from your lap to stare at it in surprise. "Hungry, little wolf?"
You toss a pillow at Caleb. "You better feed me! This is neglect!"
Caleb lifts his hands up, surrendering. "Ok, ok. You know your Caleb will always treat you right. Because he's the best, riiiight?"
You squint at him, but relent. "Yes, Caleb is the best. But only when he's nice to me."
Caleb grins, bending to kiss your hair, "I'll go fix you your favorites, pipsqueak."
Valko watches him go. "He's going to make Zayne eat carrots, isn't he."
You nod. "Without a doubt, he's so petty."
