Super cute 💕😍💗
My inspiration:
When I was reading my textbook the section about the origins of nail polish really stuck with me. Queen Nefertiti stained her nails red with henna to signify her status. Although I didn’t use much red throughout the project I drew on the image of Aten, the sun god that Nefertiti ruled under. I also drew on Beyonce’s depiction of Queen Nefertiti in ‘Sorry’ and images from Solange’s ‘Cranes in the Sky’. I had these images in mind and I wanted to challenge my drawing and painting skills so I made the painting which I’ve entitled 'Queen’. I’ve never painted anything or worked with acrylic paint so I wanted to use this opportunity to work on that. Finally, I created complimentary nail designs and put them on a pyramid that I made out of wire.

It’s been a long journey. Reflecting on my experience during nail school reminds me off all that I’ve overcome in 2016. Unlike everyone else January 1st didn’t really feel like a new start for me because I was still doing the same routine every day. I’m really glad that I took a chance on myself and decided to go to nail school. I learned a lot of new techniques, learned more about myself and began to really appreciate the talent that I am blessed with. On top of that I got to meet some really cool people that I wouldn’t have otherwise met.
2016 was a particularly rough year for me. I don’t really talk about it a lot because it seems to be taboo, but at the beginning of 2016 I was in my senior year in college and I was severely depressed, barely getting through each day. I didn’t have a lot of support at my PWI and I felt stuck. On top of that I felt ashamed of my situation, like I was the only person that couldn’t handle what life was giving me. Even though it was one of the lowest points of my life, I’m happy that something beautiful came out it. It’s part of my story and what’s made me who I am today. After leaving college, I decided that I wanted to be an entrepreneur so that I’d never have to compromise any of my values and be able to give to others the thing that I was missing when was in college in the way that I know how. And that’s how BlaqueX was born!
Going through this made me more certain about my goals in life and that has made everything so much easier. Along the way there are people who have tried to dissuade me because they felt that I was selling myself short. They’ve said things “You have a bachelor’s in environmental science; you should get a real job! This can be a hobby!” I know these comments were well-intentioned, but I truly believe that I am living up to my potential. I can’t see the smallness in wanting to own my own business and being able to pour my soul into something that I love. I have high hopes for what BlaqueX can be but I will continue to create because that is who I am as a person.
Now I’m thinking about my next steps and I’m a little unsure about everything but that’s okay. I have faith that things will work out with a little bit of hard work :) My next goal is to set up a mobile nail salon and I need your help! I’ll make another post about it but for now I just wanted to end this post by thanking everyone for your continuous love and support. It truly means the world to me <3 <3 <3

Year after year, hundreds and thousands of assignment sheets later… I continue to personally mark each student’s work.
Each stroke of paint and polish, each nail tip is the learning effort of each student. I continued & persevere to maintain the same appreciation of everyone's efforts and hard work. They submitted 10, but I know they did hundreds before getting these best 10. 👐 As long as the student's passion doesn't wane, our commitment to each of them would remain steadfast and strong @pinkroomnailacademy
