What to wear to a wedding - part 1
I have an amazing group of best friends. There are six of us: four women, and two men, and we are most certainly what I'd consider an anomaly in the world of friendship because most of us met when we were pre-pubescent children.
Well, tomorrow, one of my oldest friends from this group of six is getting married -- the first in our group -- making it a momentous occasion not only for Ryan, the groom, but for the rest of us, too.
I've known Ryan, the groom, for almost as long as I can remember, and our friendship dates all the way back to kindergarten (though it wasn't until much later that we became especially close).
We went to the same elementary school, middle school, high school, and university spending nearly 16 years of education together, and while we've had our ups and downs, he is without a doubt one of the many people I feel lucky to have in my life.
So it goes without saying that I am overjoyed that in less than 24 hours he is going to tie the knot with an amazing woman who he adores and who I know adores him just as much.
Naturally I'm excited for Ryan and his beautiful bride Sam but of course with weddings comes a plethora of to-dos: RSVP (check!), find the registry (check!), buy the gift (check!), and lastly, find something to wear.
It's a fine art selecting an outfit for a wedding. You can't be too flashy lest you draw unwanted attention or, god forbid, distract guests from the bride. If it's a church ceremony you'll need to be adequately modest, but since weddings are notoriously good places to meet new people you also don't want to be too nun-like. Cleavage needs to be tasteful, choosing the wrong colour can make you look like an odd-ball extra bridesmaid or have you blending in with the decor, footwear needs to be classy yet dancing friendly, and of course anything white, beige, ecru, or the likes is off-limits. As if getting dressed wasn't already hard enough.
I will be posting an update to this entry sometime early next week showing you all what I ended up wearing (I'm not posting it right now because I still haven't the foggiest what I'll be sporting) so check back for that, but for right now I thought I'd share at least one element of my outfit: my nails.
Today I tried Essie Sleek Sticks for the first time, and I have to say, I'm pretty pleased. If you aren't familiar with Sleek Sticks, they are nail appliques that come in a variety of patterns and designs. You peel them off the backing, stick them to your nails, press, file off the excess and voila! Super easy.
Here's how mine turned out:
My only complaint with the product was that the appliques were not wide enough. Even starting with the largest size for the thumb nail, once I got to my middle finger, they weren't wide enough to cover my entire nail (and I don't think I have particularly large fingers...). So on my middle and ring fingers there are small gaps of approximately 2mm on each side of the applique that are not covered. It's not super noticeable, so it's no big deal really, but there's definitely room for improvement in that respect.
Other than that, it was a really quick and easy process to put them on, and they look great, feel like I'm wearing nothing more than polish and weren't crazy expensive (I found mine at Marshalls for $7.99 per pack). I'll let you all know how long they last (all it said on the package was "long lasting" and we all know that "long" is a relative term) and post more pictures of other designs I try out.
So there you have it. The only think I know I'll be wearing tomorrow to the wedding are Essie Slick Sticks in "Glam it On". Stay tuned for more details.
