Shout out to my novel Speed for accurately displaying how dumb gay girls are.
Snippet from The Talisman
Gods, this wakefulness was going to kill him one of these days. He was sure it was part of the curse--that wretched thing never seemed to let him have a moment of peace. But then again, did any murderer ever have peace?
He ran his fingers along the branches of a drooping almond tree. It burst into flames, a beautiful, dangerous thing that had him spellbound for those few seconds when it seemed the world slowed to a stop. When the wood disintegrated to ashes he sighed, turning his palm over and studying the lines in the flesh.
Lines that throbbed and hummed with untold magic.
Almost all at once he remembered Scheherazade's stories--he had tucked one of them into his nightclothes but never got around to reading it before he retired. The scroll crackled when he moved: he was sure it was folding in on itself. Rahim took it out from the pocket it rested in, just above his heart--strange that he should put it there when he did not even know who his heart belonged to. That is, if he even still had one.
He traced the calligraphy with weary fingers, following the loops and curls of the ink like a dancer with its partner, entangled in that mysterious embrace of words and paper. It urged him to sit, to rest a while as he read the moonlit murmurings of the night. "Uncle?" A shy voice asked, and he looked up. There was Inara, edges of her silken khaftan bunched in her tiny fists. "What are you doing awake?" He replied, setting the scroll aside on the stone bench. "Shouldn't you be in bed?"
"I can't sleep," she said, brushing back a coal-black lock from her forehead. "I went to find Baba, but Baba was fast asleep with Ami and I didn't want to wake him." She squinted. "What are you reading?" "A letter," Rahim answered, hoping that that would be enough to abate her questions. It wasn't. She snuggled in beside him, turning the scroll this way and that in an attempt to read the Arabic lettering in the dim light.
"Who is it from?"
"The sultana," he sighed. Inara looked up at him, obviously intrigued. "You have a sultana? Baba said you weren't going to get married again." Of course, Rahim thought, leave it to Khalid to try to explain away my mistakes. "I'm not," he countered, but it wasn't quite as forceful as he would have liked it to be. "She's only there until I decide what to do with her."
"But she must like you, Uncle Shahryar," his niece insisted, "or she wouldn't be writing you letters." "I ordered her to." His words were clipped, a tinge of irritation evident in their tones. "There's nothing between us." Inara laughed, a clear, bell-like laugh that caused Rahim's heart to ache--she sounded so much like Najila one would have thought the former sultana was her mother instead of Nadira. "You sound like Baba, when Ami catches him planning a surprise for her birthday. Are you sure?"
"Of course I'm sure," he growled, snatching the scroll from Inara's hands not at all gently. "Now, are you going to go back to sleep, or are you going to talk my ear off for the rest of the night?" "No." Inara crossed her arms, her lips set in a tiny pout. "I want to hear you read the letter."
Yeah... so technically, kids can be a bother. (Especially if you're in love and not willing to admit it.)

quick rionen + najila art because i remembered they existed and i love them
“I am not weak,” he growled once more, and the ground split at his words, “I am not oblivious,” he ground out, and the sky rent from top to bottom as ichor spilled out of its sarcoline depths, “and I am not a fool.” A strangled gasp escaped her when he slit her throat in one, fluid motion, unlike the time he had taken with her paramour. “You underestimate the one who holds fire in his grasp,” he said quietly as the life ebbed out of her wound, the light in him ebbing out with it. “Try to remember in another life, wherever I may find you.”
Quote from the revised prologue of The Talisman
i haven't talked about najila and rionen in yeeeaarrrrssss, and i never really talked much about their backstory stuff--but one thing i always think is funny that people in-universe and out would probably never guess is that najila is actually from a really huge family and all her siblings are still alive (for now!)
