“Congrats, kouhai; you’re finally hitting that.”
“There’s not a single thing right about this sentence!”
"This is where these are supposed to go, yeah?"
Name: “Name? S’just Kunio. …Shit, that’s not gonna fly, is it…? Fine, Fuunji. Kunio Fuunji.” Age: “Eighteen. …Look; I’m legal, yeah? It’s fine.” Position desired: “Heard you guys got openings for Investiagators. The case-by-case type, yeah? I’m in.” Previous experience & qualifications: “Listen, I wasn’t even gonna try for Detective. I know that’s a hard refusal without a badge, and the red guy looks too intense to be flexible on it. And I ain’t had any official position before, either. But let me give it to you straight: if you’re looking for someone who’s got more than his share of licks beating the streets looking to track down a lead, putting his neck on the line against thugs, crooks and killers, I’m your guy. I’m confident in that.”
“…Heard rumblings you guys don’t settle for half-measures and only want the truth. I respect that. I can be pretty abrasive, but I think I can be a team player with that kinda ideal.” Opinion on comic sans: “…Ain’t that usually for the Sunday funnies? Ah, whatever; no skin off my nose; you do you.”
“Hmm? I thought somebody else was answering the investigations applications- No matter, I will handle this.”
“Anyway, you’re correct. Eighteen is a perfectly reasonable age for the job, and I’m more concerned with your merit and your worth than a silly concern like age. I do find your lack of official certification concerning, but your experience looks impressive, and if we can fit in a goose of all things I believe we should have room for you in our agency. Consider yourself hired.”

“What about those kindsa ‘snake-tail’ chicks; because I’m pretty sure there’s gotta be at least as couple somewhere around here.”
“Beastkin don’t count! I’m no biologist, but I’m pretty sure snakes store venom in their mouths or something!”

“... Is it normal for you to assume that right off the bat? Not sure if that says a lot about the city, or you.“
“Come on, then! Hit me!”
Kunio calls it resistance training. Makoto’s fairly certain they hadn’t meant resistance in that way.
She still refuses to hit him. Her excuse, as always, is that she doesn’t hold back very well, and the last thing she wants to do is actually hurt him, even though it might help to knock a bit of sense into him.
The volleyballs were Kunio’s idea, and given how soft they are, Makoto won’t feel as guilty about it when she inevitably nails Kunio right in the face this way. And so, Makoto finds herself serving volleyballs directly at Kunio, who’s adopted some kind of wide stance a few yards away. Even when she takes a quick break to gather the balls up again, he doesn’t move from that spot. If nothing else, his tenacity is impressive.
Eventually, one of the balls does hit Kunio in the kisser. Makoto winces for a moment, stopping her onslaught momentarily. “You alright?” she calls.
“I’m fine! This is nothin’!” he grins. Despite the red mark on his face, Kunio hasn’t moved from his sumo-esque stance. “You don’t need to slow down on my account!”
“You’re the boss,” she says, spiking another ball at him. High schoolers are weird.
“This is good, right?” he calls.
“I dunno, you tell me,” she says, taking a moment to gather some nearby balls.
“I mean, it’s good practice! Gotta be good exercise too.”
“Practice for what?” mutters Makoto. She’d much rather be playing lacrosse.
To Kunio’s credit, he barely stumbles over his words even as the onslaught of volleyballs continue to find their marks. “I’m just saying, it’s important to stay active.”
“You’re preaching to the choir kid,” she says, tossing another ball up into the air.
“Especially at your age, right?”
The volleyball hits the ground.
“My age? You little fu- you brat, you know how old I am!” she says, incredulous. “I’m not that much older than you!”
“No need to shout…” he says, wrinkling his brow. “I’m just saying, adults need to make sure they’re still active.”
They’re at a gym right now. She has a membership to it. She is stronger, faster, and, if she may be so bold, better looking than him. There may be lectures Makoto Nanaya needs, but this is not one of them.
She bends down, grabbing a volleyball with one hand. “You want some resistance training, Kunio? Try this one on!” she says, tossing it into the air.
Makoto pulls back, curling her hand into a fist. Back home, one of the few armagus Makoto practiced allowed her to create a crackling ball of energy from her tonfas. The ars in those weapons allowed her to fire the ball outwards, helping her cover her weaknesses in long-range combat. She doesn’t have her ars here, she doesn’t have the Comet Cannon. But the volleyball is close enough in size, and Makoto’s timing is always perfect.
As the volleyball passes in front of her, Makoto twists, her fist shooting out with devastating strength.
“Break Shot!”
For a single moment, the volleyball seems to sit in midair where it meets Makoto’s fist, right before it remembers how physics work. It rockets into Kunio’s midsection faster than anyone can blink, burying itself in his gut before its force carries him along for the ride as well. In an instant, where there once was a high schooler, there is nothing.
Kunio flies back towards the far wall, the volleyball still hurtling into his body until both of them hit the stone surface hard enough to leave a small impact crater. The ball bounces away, mostly unharmed, but Kunio simply stands with his back to the wall.
Makoto’s eyes widen as she realizes what she’s done. “Oh shit! Kunio, you alright?” she says, sprinting over to him. “Please tell me you’re alive! Noel and Tsubaki are gonna be pissed if they find out I accidentally killed someone!”
“…flinch,” mumbles Kunio.
Makoto leans in. “Huh? Kunio, speak up.”
“Didn’t flinch,” he says. He smiles up at Makoto, despite the giant welt now visible on his midsection.
She breathes a sigh of relief. No manslaughter charges for Makoto today. “Alright, I think we’re done here,” she says. “Let’s move before anyone notices what I did and tries to make me pay for it.”
“N-no, I can still do this!” he grunts. “I’m good, I’m good! Keep going, Makoto!”
She stares at him for a few moments. “Can you even move?”
“…I think I’m stuck.”
Makoto reaches for his hands for a moment, but stops midway. Putting her hands on hips, she simply shrugs and turns the other way. “That’s for calling me old,” she says.
Kunio makes a mental note to never ask for Ume’s age.

What a way to insult Misako. Yes, that was likely not his intention and she knew him fairly well to understand from where he was coming from but she couldn’t stand it. What kind of stupid way to be considerate was this? It hurt more than the break-up and that’s saying a lot. An incredulous look sets on his facial features, eyebrow raising as if expecting further addition to his comment.
“That’s very nice of you, Kunio. Have you grown softer in just a couple of weeks?”
She wasn’t one to dwell more than needed. If he was going to stand still with his fists up, cautious on where to land a hit then she would force him to return a worthwhile punch! Rearing back her left arm, Misako unleashes a straight punch toward his gut.
This crap was getting on her nerves!
“Don’t be an idiot and quit holding back! If you have any respect for me, you’ll let your fists talk properly!”

Half-Life VR but the AI is Self-Aware
Crow stood with one hand on her hip and the other holding a trowel, looking out from an exceedingly wide brimmed hat as the spring sun shone down brilliantly. Her current outfit was somewhere between vampire aristocrat and gardener.
“Yes, I can see as much. However, are you aware these grounds are private property? How did you even get in here, did the gates open for you?” Her head tilted for a moment as she looked up at the castle, a brief frown on her face. She’d never had any desire to lock the gates, yet the... Property, seemed to be granting access at random these days.
She turned back and sighed, her eyes closing.
“Look, it’s not a problem. Just... Don’t frighten the phantasms, they’re harmless so you don’t need to fear them.” She started going back to her task, trailed by one of the spectral, floating nudibranch like creatures that was difficult to see in the daylight. “Oh, and I wouldn’t eat any of the glittering plants, I have no idea what would happen.”
