DD: [In response to Craig Ferguson teasing his socks:] I need to talk to Nancy Collini. [Off the other's puzzled expression:] She styles me.
IN COLLINI'S OWN WORDS
June 7, 2021:
I came to The X-Files because of David, because I work[ed] with him on Playing God. And, um, it was also his style. So, when I came
back-- when they got back from L.A. or get back to L.A. from Vancouver-- I am, I did David and Gillian's clothes. ...It was the best job I've probably ever had, any job. ...We had a lot of fun as it was.
And I continued with David. I did Californication, and I did Aquarius; and, you know, I went off and did Evolution with them. [Note: and I Want to Believe.] We always made it a good time. ...I had, [the] trust with David and Gillian that, uh, that was kind of innate; and it just kind of worked for us with what we were doing.
The Unnatural was [fun]; but, um, I-- David wasn't really in that one, and neither was Gillian; so, I had a real... [job.] Jay [costume director] decided to give everybody a really cool, uh, men's baseball shirt-- which was really nice-- and then we had all their names put on the back. Everyone got an individual shirt. That was a wrap gift. But The Unnatural is good, I'm so proud of him for doing all that.... That was a really fun episode. So was Hollywood A.D.... Yeah, that was a blast, um, because I was dressing Gary Shandling-- he was a dear friend-- Um, and Tea to look like Mulder and Scully. That was a blast....
Both of the movies were great. I love the second one-- we got out, were were off Californication and we zipped up there. It was during the writer's strike-- we had already written, so we could do our movie. I made David go see, uh, The Bucket List with me; and he was all bored [unclear, The Golden Globes.] And so, we leave. And I found out that he could hear me running down the hallway to knock on his door and tell him he won his Golden Globe.

[In response to "So, you were doing on-set costuming and doing all the prep for the episodes, as well?"] Yes! Just for David and Gillian. It is [a lot]...but what we would do is we would get the closets built upfront, you know-- I would order five Hugo Boss suits that fit him great, you know, in eight different colors. So, I was set for the season. And I would have a lot of shirts made at Anto or, um, you know, off the rack. And same with her. So we were just, you know-- it was a front-load kind of show because I don't really believe in-- and they didn't either-- just wearing... I like repeats, you know. I think repeating ties and, you know, some things. ...We did a lot of repeats and you just freshen stuff up. And it was, it wasn't always a lot of work....

Nancy talking about being a costume designer for Fight the Future:
When I got introduced to-- because I just worked with David on Playing God; and, um, that's when I got introduced to the whole gang [on The X-Files's Fight the Future set.] And, um, it was really incredible. We had these very exciting sets that were built done on ... the lower stages at FOX; and ginormous sets where we brought in air conditioning units to keep them cold, because they wanted to see the smoke, you know, coming from breath. And then the art department did an incredible job-- there were all these aliens, Scully was in one of them, in one of the pods. And it was pretty incredible. Um, I'll never forget when we were in Bakersfield and we're trying to get these swooping helicopter shots, and they felt like they-- you think they came pretty low. And just everything, just, uh, wiped out, like, all the corn-- we were in the corn field. So, that's a vivid memory....
We had a lot of guys in hazmat suits, and we were shooting in the desert and they all come equipped with air, so that was interesting to keep them all in check and good.
The first night [filming I Want to Believe] it was actually colder in Vancouver than it was in Whistler, believe it or not-- I think maybe because of the insulation from the snow kept it warmer? But there was a night when David was chasing [Callum]; and first Callum pulled groin, and then David pulled a groin. So, we had at least two guys with pulled groins. [Laughs.] In the cold, in the cold, on the city streets in Vancouver. It was hilarious. Oh, not good; but it was funny.
On the second X-Files, maybe they wanted David to drag this guy. I'm like, 'Okay?' So, we came up with this device where we, um, cut up a sled, kind of plastic sheet, and put it, sewed it on the bottom of his jacket so he could just glide 'em.
I'm just, I'm trying to think of some other really good episodes that were-- I mean, it was just all just so much fun. We'd be so tired. Like, you'd be driving home and you even didn't know if you're going to make it home! ...But we had just the best crew! I mean, and I love the cast and all the writers.
