"Sollie 17" 1979-80 Ed and Nancy Kienholz https://americanart.si.edu/artwork/sollie-17-68049 Sadly, the alpha lioness of the pride, Nancy Reddin Kienholz passed on Wednesday July 7th at 75. Nancy was the long time collaborator and wife of Edward Kienholz. She grew up the daughter of a skid row walking beat cop turned LA Chief of Police(1967-69) Tom Reddin. As a young court reporter, she met Ed and passion art and art passion rooted and took hold. Ed, initially, and then Ed and Nancy applied their unflinching and unrelenting gaze to a world filled with insufferable Injustices and brutality where our modern spiritual dilemma was without relief or satisfactory solution. Ed and Nancy, along with Bruce Nauman were two of the great pissed-off muckraking LA moralists artists. And ironically, while their art was filled with violence, loathing, indictment, pathos and ravaged decay, their work was often trancendantly beautiful. I don't think they have ever gotten proper credit for formal power of their work. Nancy's passing is a huge loss for us! RIP Nancy, fierce and passionate warrioress! https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2019-08-09/nancy-reddin-kienholz-who-pushed-art-boundaries-with-husband-edward-dies-at-75 #nancyreddinkienholz #nancykienholz #edkienholz #edwardkienholz #edandnancykienholz #edwardandnancykienholz #sculpture #sculptor #contemporaryart #contemporarysculptor #contemporarysculpture #petersheltonsculptor #petersheltonsculpture @petersheltonsculptor @petershelton.com @petershelton @sheltonbigart #petershelton #bigart #sheltonbigart (at Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Renwick Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1DXw8jFYgM/?igshid=1qa0b7x8m61mv
Nancy Reddin Kienholz, long time collaborator and wife of Edward Kienholz, passed on Wednesday July 7th at 75. The work shown here is the shockingly raw yet lovely "Still Life with Little Bird." It epitomizes the brutal beauty, humanity and unflinching critical gaze that Ed, initially, and then Ed and Nancy applied to the world. Ed and Nancy, along with Bruce Nauman were two of the great pissed-off muckraking LA moralist artists. The world was filled with insufferable Injustices and brutality and our spiritual dilemma was without relief or satisfatory solution. This work belonged to Betty and Monte Factor, nephew of Max Factor, who were early collectors of Kienholzs' work. They also owned Ed's seminal work called the "The Illegal Operation," now at the LA County Museum of Art. The story of this work is quite wonderful. Apparently, Ed was walking in West Berlin with a friend of his. He noticed a woman looking through the window of a shoe store. Ed didn't speak much German so he asked his friend to see if the lady would be willing to have a body cast of her made for a nice fee. She said no. Ed kept upping the price to the lady and she kept saying no and that she was not interested. Finally, Ed said to his friend to tell her that Ed would buy her any two pairs of shoes that she liked in this store. The shoes would cost now substantially less than his last cash offer. To this shoe buying proposal, she said yes! As the three of them walked back to the studio, the lady, who happily carried her two new boxes of shoes, said to Ed's friend "yes! now I will have sex with him." Upon arriving at the studio, the lady was greeted by Nancy who prepared the plaster bandages to make the body cast. The lady was greatly relieved that she was not expected to have sex with Ed! https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2019-08-09/nancy-reddin-kienholz-who-pushed-art-boundaries-with-husband-edward-dies-at-75 #nancyreddinkienholz #sculpture #sculptor #contemporaryart #contemporarysculptor #contemporarysculpture #petersheltonsculptor #petersheltonsculpture @petersheltonsculptor @petershelton.com @petershelton @sheltonbigart #petershelton #bigart #sheltonbigart (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1CzfSBFLVx/?igshid=ouj81gos81u6
