Sadly, the alpha lioness of the pride, Nancy Reddin Kienholz passed on Wednesday July 7th at 75. Nancy was the long time collaborator and wife of Edward Kienholz. She grew up the daughter of a skid row beat-walking cop turned LA Chief of Police(1967-69) Tom Reddin.
As a young court reporter, she met Ed and passion art and art passion rooted and took hold.
Ed, initially, and then Ed and Nancy applied their unflinching and unrelenting gaze to a world filled with insufferable Injustices and brutality where our modern spiritual dilemma was without relief or satisfactory solution. Ed and Nancy, along with Bruce Nauman were two of the great pissed-off muckraking LA moralists artists.
And ironically, while their art was filled with violence, loathing, indictment, pathos and ravaged decay, their work was often trancendantly beautiful. I don’t think they have ever gotten proper credit for formal power of their work.
Nancy’s passing is a huge loss for us! RIP Nancy, fierce and passionate warrioress!
