are there any 90's finnish songs that are still well known there today? like even younger people not yet alive then, know the songs by heart (or at least recognize them)
been meaning to ask this for a while since i just remembered some 90's songs from here which my generation is also very familiar with, mostly because it's our parents' music
Oh boy are there. Quite a few actually. I think it’d be easier to name some very well know 90’s artists than start listing all the actual songs that I could come up with that people will sing along with when they come on the radio. So here are some bands and artists that have made huge hits in the 90’s that have stood the test of time thus far:
Neljö Ruusua jumps to mind first. One of the four finnish bands to have back to back wins of band of the year for Emma Gaala, for 1992 and 1993.
Leevi and the Leaving is also pretty high up there as they have some very very iconic songs that people know by name alone and anyone could and would pick at karaoke.
Katri Helena recently did her last ever live show. Though her career spans decades, those include the 90’s, so she is also up there. Truly an icon.
Now anyone who made it through middle school PE dance classes without hearing a single song from Paula Koivuniemi should get their hearing checked. So many songs that people continue to love and vontinue to dominate ballrooms to this day.
J. Karjalainen is also distinctly known, with far too many hits to to count. Samuli Edelman also made some hits in the 90’s.
Popeda, Don huonot, Eppu Normaali and Kolmas nainen are also responsible for many rock classics in Finland. There are songs from them that never left the radio playlists.
The new season of Vain elämää has a few. Both Egotrippi and Pelle miljoona have some hits from the 90’s that I bet we’ll be hearing on this season, though Pelle’s most iconic songs are mostly from the 80’s and Egotrippi was for more actove in the early 00’s and 10’s.
Most recently making headlines is Ultra Bra, who are doing some big comeback tours. Though I wouldn’t necessarily recognize their entire discography, they have a distinct sound that I think a lot of people would still recognize.
And I couldn’t make this post without mentioning the first artist whose voice and name I learned to recognize and have loved dearly ever since, whoch is Kaija Koo of course, with some of her biggest hits being from the 90’s <3
And even that doesn’t cover it, because that is mostly rock and iskelmä (which to be fair have aged the best). Then there is the EDM and club music that is equally as nostalgic, like Bomfunk MC’s Freestyler.
So the answer is yes. Far too many to count.
