Let’s Read Nancy Drew: pg. 70-71
Pages 70-71: Silver Foxes in the Hen House
“I’m glad you weren’t hurt,” he added. “Thanks for being such a good sport about it. Did you come to see me or my brother?” he asked. “I’m Fred Mathews.”
Then Keene decides to throw yet another curve ball across the plate when she describes Frilliam as looking pretty darn young for their age.
“Both were tall, spare, and strong-muscled. Though their hair was grey, the men’s faces were youthful and unwrinkled.”
So...jeez louise, the relationships in the this book are a bigger mystery than the actual mystery.
(The will is in a clock in the back of those thieves’ van, Nancy! We learned this from the picture on the friggin’ title page!)
Okay, so...
Frilliam are Crowley’s cousins.
Marna’s father is also Crowley’s cousin.
Frilliam once proposed to Marna.
And these dudes are being described as younger than Marna?
[Marna who—for the record—has only ever been described as “elderly” and “woman.”]
I have officially given up trying to figure out the complexities of the Marna-Frilliam relationship. But if any of you, dear readers, care to tackle the challenge, please pass your findings onto me.
Nancy, unfazed by the rat king of a knot of a relationship standing before her, goes into her speil and lays her lawyer game on real thick.
“My dad—the lawyer Carson Drew—and I are working on the case. We believe there might have been a later will than the one presented by Mr. Topham, and we’d like to find it.”
“And you came to see if William and I could give you a clue?” Fred’s bright blue eyes sparkled boyishly.
Moving past yet another not-so-subtle indication that these older dudes have got it going on...
Just so we’re all on the same page here: Mr. Drew is NOT working this case. He was never hired by anyone. At most he has assisted his daughter’s investigation with some clues here and there, and one time he offered a little pro-bono legal advice to the Turner girls.
That’s about it.
So Nancy is definitely misleading these dudes into thinking that actual legal proceedings are ongoing.
But her deceit reaps no rewards, as she doesn’t learn anything from team silver fox.
...okay, well, I guess she learns two little things:
1) Crowley promised them money and failed to deliver.
[Current number of loved ones Josiah Crowley has dicked over by hoarding his wealth, making false promises, and then writing a will that left everything to his wealthy a-hole part of the family: 7!]
2) The Mathews brothers here just wanted the money so they could travel.
Compared to the sisters living in poverty while their natural talents are wasted and the elderly women who don’t have enough money to get a quality education for their little girl...it’s really hard to care too much about these brothers’ plight.
For once Nancy leaves a stranger’s house without staying for a meal, but not before instilling them with hope. Hope that will surely reopen old wounds should she fail in her mission.
And then she heads for home.
“No new evidence,” she told her father. “Let’s hope Mrs. Abby Rowen has some!”
