My biggest problem with Kpop Demon Hunters (as a Korean)

While we're on the subject of quick hot takes without any further explanation : how much do I detest the fact that some ignoramus(es) used "napalm era" in an otherwise culturally sensitive movie?

Except it tracks with the way Korea (still) treats its involvement in the Vietnam War, including its use of Vietnamese comfort women (resulting in Lai Đại Hàn) and its current "phenomenon" (written with a lip curl of disgust) of importing Vietnamese women as wives... Considering the fact we've never paid reparations, I have a visceral recoil any time that song is played and I see people lipsyncing that line without a single emotion except for adoration.

Okay 2nd problem is also how everyone and their mother is suddenly a Korea expert and has been correcting me or posting inaccurate shit and then mansplaining Korea back at me 🙃 So far, I've seen a bunch of people claim that Derpy is a cat, I corrected one and had the time to explain that it's a traditional tiger and magpie reference called hojakdo, then someone was like *jakhodo

...except it's Hanja and goes by both 호작도 *and* 작호도 per multiple sources in Korean 🙃

I really loved most of the movie when it came out but between the two issues above, I am starting to regret that it became so fucking popular.

How Mira's "Danger" is Done

I have a fuck off length post about Hold Them Down from EPIC coming soon, but I've been on a KPDH kick since I finally watched the movie, so have this breakdown.

In short, Mira referencing napalm in How It's Done is both referencing her using what was originally a weapon for war (something unique to her weapon, as Rumi's sword and Zoey's knives are based on weapons that were always solely ceremonial), but also her insecurities.

Let me explain.

For those who don't know, napalm is a volatile chemical weapon, typically used to make bombs. Its gelatinous texture allows for it to stick to its target, and it burns at extremely high temperatures. Needless to say, if that gets on your skin while alight, you're gonna have a bad day. In other words, "napalm era" is a reference to something both more specific and deadlier than Rumi's "blades" and Zoey looking "cute and savage".

Basically the first thing we learn about Mira is that she was the black sheep of her family. In Golden she references being labeled a "problem child" for getting "too wild". She admits she's difficult to be friends with due to her being overly blunt and short-fused, which was always seen as a liability. In other words, she's explosive and dangerous, like napalm.

This also connects to her line at the start of What It Sounds Like suggesting she's at least starting to learn to accept her rougher parts.

it's  his  turn  to  laugh  like  they're  sharing  secrets,  rubbing  where  she  elbowed  him  (  hard,  for  no  reason  whatsoever,  might  he  add  ).  he  throws  a  knowing  glance  towards  the  fans  and  winks,  which  only seems  to  rile  them  up  more.  hand  rises  to  take  her  chin,  gently  turning  with  a  firm  hand  so  he  can  whisper  in  her  ear,  "and  give  us  all  of  your  fans?  please,  make  my  job  easier.  don't  you  know  how  quickly  they'd  all  run  to  me  to  make  sure  i'm  okay  while  condemning  you?"  the  smirk  is  loud  in  his  tone  as  he  pulls  back  to  look  at  her,  searching  her  face.  from  the  fans  point  of  view,  they  might  be  flirting,  but  he  was  gauging  whether  or  not  she'd  actually  attack  him.  “you'd  break  their  hearts  like  that?”
