Summary:

Illya's not really sure what to make of THRUSH's latest assassination attempt given how unusual it was - modified children's toys, of all things - but the situation naturally worries Napoleon, especially as it's so close to the August Affair, and he makes Illya promise to take extra care this time around- even though he's gonna be around too, he's not prepared to take any chances with his partner's life.

As the assignment gets underway a couple days later, Illya's concerned about Napoleon's sudden strange behaviour; ignoring flirtation attempts, seemingly not recognising the woman he spent time with the evening before (even though it's definitely her), and as incidents begin to stack up, he cannot shake the feeling that something is very wrong...

Meanwhile the real Napoleon Solo is a captive of THRUSH, desperate to escape as soon as possible because it's only a matter of time before Illya realises the man he's working with is an imposter. And while he doesn't doubt his lover's ability to act like everything's normal...he also knows that time is running out.

(And as Illya discovers the truth, he can't help but fear that it may already be far too late...)

Of course, he's hoping it won't be necessary to have to use it, but given Section VIII's past reliability - and having seen the results of this one for himself - he has every faith their equipment will not fail him...and it doesn't. Only there's been something of a communication error regarding Napoleon's knowledge of said invention...

But when Napoleon returns to the room, it's not long before he finds out exactly why that his, that his usual optimisim in these situations took quite a hit in the immediate aftermath of hearing about Illya's absence from the plane..

Summary:

In the immediate aftermath of the attack by whatever the hell it was, Napoleon's scared, panicked...terrified, even. Making the report eases nothing because he knows it's a difficult one to swallow, so it's not exactly a surprise when he goes for debriefing and overhears whispers that maybe he's finally lost it because he's overworked-

It doesn't help that his partner's nowhere to be seen. Aside from a glimpse at HQ and snippets over the communicator he's not heard much from him, so he's left anxiously waiting in Illya's apartment...and though logically Napoleon knows it's just that he's checking out the scene, part of him can't help but worry that maybe Illya doesn't believe it either...

Illya never doubted it for a second even before seeing the proof with his own eyes, and after doing so he's deeply shaken over how close he came to losing Napoleon for good, that if this creature had succeeded in its mission...he's also furious on hearing the rumours about his partner because he also knows the origin, and he will not stand for it! After everything UNCLE has encountered they should all know better.

(Nor will he stand anyone dismissing his report.)
