L'arredo di una casa costituisce un vero e proprio archivio di esperienze. Seguendo quest'idea, la curatrice dell'opera e le sue collaboratrici, studiose di tessuti e di moda, hanno analizzato divani capitonnés, poltrone crapauds, tendaggi, baldacchini, frange e nappe confrontandoli con fonti documentali di carattere artistico, economico, letterario, con abitudini sociali e sistemi di produzione industriale. Le immagini, accuratamente scelte, presentano interni di abitazioni ottocentesche, soprattutto italiane, con i loro arredi, mobili, ritratti, riuscendo così ad offrire uno spaccato per molti versi inedito del vivere quotidiano borghese nel secolo scorso.
