18 janvier : l'armée, au pouvoir, parade dans les rues de Bangkok

Le 18 janvier est jour de grande parade militaire à Bangkok, la Thaïlande (ou plutôt ses élites politiques) célèbre son armée. Laquelle est mobilisée à la frontière thaïlando-cambodgienne depuis juillet 2025 pour un conflit frontalier de faible importance. Cela lui permet de se poser en garante de la sécurité nationale et d’accroitre son autonomie à l’égard du pouvoir civil.

La journée de l’armée est un événement d’importance dans un pays qui a connu 19 coups d’État militaires depuis 1932 (date de l’abolition de la monarchie absolue). Le dernier date de 2014. Certes la junte militaire a cédé la place à un gouvernement civil durant l’été 2019, mais non sans avoir pris toutes les précautions pour continuer à diriger le pays. La constitution a été modifiée en 2016, désormais les membres du Sénat sont tous nommés par l’armée et comme un gouvernement doit être investi par les deux chambres, il doit avoir l’agrément total des militaires. Ce n’était plus le cas de la cheffe du gouvernement, Paethongtarn Shinawatra, du parti Pheu Thai, qui a été destituée le 29 août 2025, pour être remplacée par Anutin Charnvirakul, bien plus favorable à l’armée que sa prédécesseure.

Cette modification constitutionnelle a été vécue comme un 20e coup d’État militaire inscrivant le pouvoir de l’armée dans la durée. Le roi, comme son défunt père qui a toujours penché du côté de l’armée, en a profité pour accroître ses prérogatives. Désormais, ses décisions n’ont plus à être contresignées par un ministre ! C’est donc une dictature militaire sous commandement royal qui parade aujourd’hui dans les rues de la capitale thaïlandaise.

Quant à la date de cette Journée des forces armées thaïlandaises (วันกองทัพไทย), le 18 janvier, elle fait référence à un combat singulier à dos d’éléphant opposant Naresuan (roi du Siam) au prince héritier de Birmanie. Le second fut tué par le premier à Nong Sarai (province de Suphanburi) le 18 janvier 1593. Le Siam (future Thaïlande) ne payant plus son tribut à la Birmanie, celle-ci avait envoyé une armée pour soumettre son vassal. Non seulement le Siam repoussa l’attaque, mais étendit son influence sur une vaste région. C’est donc un grand roi que vénère ce 18 janvier la Thaïlande. Autrefois, c’était sa date de naissance, le 25 avril qui était célébrée. Mais en 2005, il fut décidé qu’il valait mieux célébrer la fameuse bataille que l'histoire officielle raconte comme un duel à dos d’éléphant (Iuthheete) entre un roi et un prince. Soit le plus prestigieux des combats en Asie du Sud-Est. Désormais aucune armée, pendant longtemps, n’osa plus marcher sur Ayutthaya (la capitale de l’époque). Sous son règne (1590-1605), le roi Naresuan redonna au Siam toute sa puissance : le royaume atteignit son expansion maximale.

Chaque 18 janvier, une cérémonie est organisée au quartier général de l'Armée royale thaïlandaise de 10h00 à 11h30, complétée par une célébration au sanctuaire Phra Chai Mongkhon Phum, rendant hommage au roi Rama V, suivi d’une cérémonie de dépôt de gerbes au Mur du Souvenir et une célébration bouddhiste. Puis, à 13h00, commandant en chef de l’armée royale thaïlandaise rend visite aux blessés de l'hôpital Phramongkutklao, y compris la visite de soldats blessés à l’hôpital de l'armée. Ce même jour, des soutiens du régime organisent des actions caritatives et bénévoles.
