Harry Smith, ethnomusicologist & cat's cradle string-game expert, this be Cat's Whiskers design. Weakening malnourished in NY Bowery Franciscan shelter, he stayed with me a few weeks, then we went together to Naropa Institute; as resident alchemist-philosopher he remained till his last year & trip to New York 1991 to receive a Grammy award for life-long advancement of American Folk Music. MacAdams tho best known for her documenting the feminist movement in its infancy, was close to so many of the downtown New York City poets & writers, that it was only natural she’d end up following them to Boulder in Naropa’s early years.  She’s most recently featured in the 2018 Netflix documentary “Feminists: What Were They thinking”  & some of her work is up on  http://cynthiamacadamsphotographer.com & all her books are well worth tracking down.

• Blind Curse By SImon J. Ortiz • You could drive blind for those two seconds and they would be forever. I think that as a diesel truck passes us eight miles east of Mission. Churning through the storm, heedless of the hill sliding away. There isn’t much use to curse but I do. Words fly away, tumbling invisibly toward the unseen point where the prairie and sky meet. The road is like that in those seconds, nothing but the blind white side of creation.  You’re there somewhere, a tiny struggling cell. You just might be significant but you might not be anything. Forever is a space of split time from which to recover after the mass passes. My curse flies out there somewhere, and then I send my prayer into the wake of the diesel truck headed for Sioux Falls one hundred and eighty miles through the storm. In the morning

After taking cold shower

—-what a mistake—-

I look at the mirror.

There, a funny guy,

Grey hair, white beard, wrinkled skin,

—-what a pity—-

Poor, dirty, old man,

He is not me, absolutely not.

Land and life

Fishing in the ocean

Sleeping in the desert with stars

Building a shelter in the mountains

Farming the ancient way;

Singing with coyotes

Singing against nuclear war—

I’ll never be tired of life.

Now I’m seventeen years old,

Very charming young man.

I sit quietly in lotus position,

Meditating, meditating for nothing.

Suddenly a voice comes to me:

“To stay young,

To save the world,

Break the mirror.”

Doctor Benway rides again. He surveys a ward full of intensive-care patients killed by a Swedish nurse who bathes twice a day. Her put household ammonia and Mr Clean into the IVs
“I thought it would clean them out Doctor” 
“Hmmm, yes, straight thinking nurse. It’s all in the day’s work. Get these stiffs out of here and let them bury each other. This world’s for the living and we need the beds . Bring on the next shift”
He turns into the Herr Professor. His eyes glint with crazed dedication and purpose.
