I wanted to send you a letter while I had the chance. Kakashi informed me that Pakkun was about to head back to your location and I could write up a quick letter for you. You bet I jumped right on that.

I wanted to tell you just how much I missed you. I know that you’re in good hands, you’re under Naruto’s protection after all, and I’ve never seen someone more determined to keep his village safe than he is. I’m so happy that you’re in such good care. I know that you can handle yourself, but just knowing that such amazing Shinobi are still in the village with you makes me feel a thousand times better about being gone.

Things are going well here, I hope that my class is doing alright at the academy. I know that they’re in good hands with you subbing in with me. I couldn’t ask for a better substitute for them. Are they asking about me at all? I miss them so much. They’re all going to be amazing Shinobi in the future, some of them have such amazing talents. I can’t wait to walk through the door when we get back and see all of their smiling faces.

But mostly I can’t wait to get back and see you. I can’t wait to be able to wrap you into my arms and tell you over and over again just how much I love you. I can’t wait to be able to hold you for as long as I want. I’m going to be like a puppy dog with you on my first day home. I’m never ever leaving your side. It’s been so long since I’ve left the village like this and I forgot just how much you miss home when you’re out.

I know it was my duty to go tho. Kakashi needed me and I have such a hard time saying no to him, especially when he believed in my strength as much as he did. I still can’t believe he chose me personally.

I still can’t believe that I’m even writing this letter instead of just talking to you. I… You were my best friend, and I can’t believe that you’re gone. It’s been years. YEARS since you left me, so why does it still hurt like it just happened yesterday?

Life has been so hard without you. You were the one that helped me through everything. You were the one that was always there to give me the advice that I needed in life. You always made sure that I made the right choices. But you’d hate to see me now.

I’m so lost. I can’t even begin to tell you how lost I am. I’ve made so many mistakes and I didn’t even realize at the time that they were mistakes, Y/n. I thought that what I was doing was right. I thought that going after Itachi was the way to make everything right again. I didn’t even realize that in reality… I was just making life harder for myself.

I made so many enemies, you’d be so upset with me. But it would be the type of upset where you just try to hide it from me. You’d tell me that everything was going to be okay when in reality you really didn’t know how things were going to go. You wouldn’t know if things would be okay, but you wouldn’t want me to worry. And like the idiot that I am, I’d believe it.

There are so many things going around. Statements like “The Uchiha are nothing but bad news.” and it hurts, Y/n. Our family is slandered, and it’s all because of him. Why did he do it? Why did Itachi have to take everything from us? From me… Not having you to talk to is the reason that I’m so angry all the time. I know that it is.

I should have been stronger, Y/n. I should have been able to stop him. I should have been the one to take Itachi out before now so that none of this would have happened. I should have saved you. I’m so sorry. I’ve failed you and it hurts so much to know that.

I know you won’t be able to physically read this, but it makes me feel so much better to leave these letters at your grave for you. It makes me look like less of a maniac when I’m not screaming at a gravestone as I vent. I hope that you know how much I miss you and how incomplete my life feels. But you’re an amazing person and you deserve so much, so please… know that your little brother will be okay, he’ll make it through. Even when it seems impossible, I’ll make it through.

I know that it probably wasn’t the best idea for me to just leave a letter like this when I’m leaving for a mission, but I couldn’t find the heart to say goodbye to you. I couldn’t bear to see the pain that I knew you would be in when I walked out that front door. I love you so much and I knew if I saw those tears I wouldn’t be able to focus on the mission.

I know it’s a drag, and I know you would have rather had me said goodbye and give you a heads up that I was leaving, but I want to come back to you in one peace. I want to come back to you with stories of how well the mission went. I want to share my first night home again by telling you just how much I love you and how much I missed you.

I know that it’s probably cowardly and it’s not like me to be this way, but you’re the light of my life and you know as well as I do that I can’t handle seeing you upset. I can’t wait until this mission is over darling. I can’t wait to get back home to you and the other ninken. I’ve been gone for so long that it’s going to feel like the first time we met all over again. Do you remember that day? Because I don’t think I’ll ever forget it.

I’ll never forget how you stole my breath, you took the air right out of my lungs that first time I laid eyes on you. Every inch of you made me realize that I had to have you. I know I might have seemed calm, cool, and collected when I approached you that day, but inside I was screaming. I was so afraid that if I made the first move I might mess it up and then I’d never be able to make you mine.

I’m so sorry that my mission sent me out at such a bad time, but the Hokage has his duties and I couldn’t ask for someone better in my life to help me get through them all and also someone who is so understanding about it.

I know it’s not normally a thing for the Hokage to be one of the ones to go on a mission like this so I’m thankful that you’ve stuck by me. You’ve stuck by me in the same way that I’m going to stick by you in whatever you have going on in your life. Just remember that no matter how hard life might get there’s always a reason to get through it. You’re going to get through it and you’ve got all of Konoha behind you. I’m sending you this letter to tell you that I’m on my way home and that I can’t wait to see you. I have so many things planned for us when I get home. I can’t wait to be able to share all these memories with you. It was a rough mission, but just being with you is going to wipe away all of those feelings.
