Hey! I'm a music major in my first year of university, which has been great so far. I'm hoping to pursue piano performance, but I'm having doubts as to whether I'm "good enough" to be in the specialization. Composition is my other option and I am confident in my abilities there, but my heart lies in performance where I unfortunately feel a little uncertain. Any tips on how I can really solidify my abilities (and feelings around them) so that I can nail the performance audition? Thank you!

It’s harder to get into the performance track than the composition track at most schools. If you want to do performance, do it. Schools are looking for dedication and teachability - you may not be professional quality yet, but can you be taught? Are you eager to learn and put in the work? Do you have the foundation that they can build off of? If so, you have a fighting chance.

Also, I recommend at least trying to double major. The more skills you have, the more options you have post-graduation. Even if you don’t end up with both degrees, having piano skills as a composer is HUGE, and understanding composition can help you write your own pieces as a performer.
