There were days that he could physically feel the cumulative weight of all the bad calls he had made. None of them were really big enough to warrant more than an irritated side glance at the time. He was the only one that would notice, but they piled, one stacking on the other, and he could feel them pressing down on his shoulders as if the weight of everything that mattered rested there and there alone.

When he was young, his mother had called him a perfectionist. He had loved it, because that’s what she called his father, and if there was a single person on earth that he idolized, it was his father. He had wanted to be exactly like him as long as he could remember, but all of those little sidesteps, those tiny miscalculations ate at him, almost as if to remind him that he wasn’t his father. Some people could never be matched.

While most days those mistakes would slide by and only a slight adjustment would put him back on track, every once and awhile there was something more. Like with so much in his life, when Nathan Thompson screwed up he took it all the way.

Nathan Thompson Introduction

Nathan is one of the lead characters in The Liberty Pole and one of my personal favourites to write for, so I thought it’d be appropriate to post up a very short clip from the moment where Bethany (the lead protagonist) meets him. 

A man was standing so that he was facing the window, his hands loosely clasped behind his back. Bethany could tell even from behind that he was dressed in a National Security Force uniform, though his hair was a rather odd shade of blond, almost as if he’d dyed dark hair and then forgotten to keep up with it. It was faded and when he turned she saw that the roots - showing very nicely with the way that he slicked it back - were a dark brown color. He was tall and his dark blue eyes were sharp. Bethany wondered in passing how dangerous they might appear if they weren’t hidden behind the tortuous-rimmed glasses perched on a nose that looked as if it might have been broken one too many times to set entirely straight. He tilted his head a little to the side, studying her as Matt walked forward and saluted him. 

“Commander Thompson, I’d like to introduce Bethany Adams.”

So this was the infamous Nathan Thompson. She had thought that there’d be more to him, perhaps some sort of walking mountain, but though he was tall he was thin beneath his uniform and his thin lips straightened out as if he were displeased.
