Yesterday, June 23rd was National Typewriter Day. This date is to commemorate the anniversary of the patent awarded to Christopher Latham Sholes, Carlos Glidden, and Samuel W. Soule in 1868 in the United States, marking a pivotal moment in the history of written communication.

I recently acquired this beautiful 1959 Smith Corona Sterling typewriter. The gentleman who sold it to me was kind enough to share its history. It belonged to his wife's grandmother who was employed with Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works division during the late 50's and through the 60's. The SR-71 Blackbird program was one of the classified projects she worked on. She would haul this typewriter to and from the office everyday while working on the Blackbird project. A typewriter is a mechanical device that allows users to type directly on a sheet of paper. Typewriter Day celebrates this humble device and the amazing pieces of literature it’s brought to us over the decades in 1868 by Americans Christopher Latham Sholes, Frank Haven Hall, Carlos Glidden and Samuel W. Soule in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, although Sholes soon disowned the machine and refused to use, or even to recommend it.

Christopher Latham Sholes was the first one who marketed the typewriter to be the commercially Sucess.It is also called as the Sholes and Glidden typewriter or the Remington 1 typewriter, the device could only type uppercase letters.

Celebrate the National Typewriter Day by organizing a typewriting contest, whoever types the fastest and with the least number of errors will win the trophy.
