Welcome to 𝔹𝕒𝕜𝕖𝕣𝕪 ʻ𝔸𝕝𝕒𝕖 ʻ𝕌𝕝𝕒— where all bread for birds is baked by brickfire! 🥖🔥🍞🔥🥧 According to old Hawaiʻi story, the ʻalae ʻula were the keeper of the fire for the gods (ironically, this bird is a wetland dweller) due to the coloration on their beak and frontal shield looking a lot like a lit flame. And in my whimsical bird world, these scarlet-beaked avians use their fiery prowess to feed the other birds with a traditional bakery!

Had this Kererū in my back yard for three and a half hours the other day, super confident, closest I’ve ever had one to me, I could’ve reached out and touched it while it was eating the berries at the end of my glass house. A beautiful experience.

With a native range streching across the northern hemisphere, from Canada to Taiwan, A. platyrhynchos is probably the most recognizable and recognized water bird, not only in the United States, but across much of the world. A. platyrhynchos are a dabbling duck, meaning they feed by tipping upside down in the water to catch their food rather than diving. Being generalist omnivores, A. platyrhynchos will go after most anything available to them, including wetland vegetation, snails, insects, seeds and agricultural plants.

Carolina parakeet

Aka. Carolina conure, pot pot chee, puzzi la née, kelinky

This now extinct bird was the only parrot native to its range. It lived in the eastern, midwest and plains states of the United States. It lived in old growth wetland forests, along rivers and in swamps were it nested in hollow trees. The last known parakeet, Incas, died in a zoo in 1918.
