Hello everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve written one of these posts so I’m back with a new adventure! Recently I took a trip to the historic Belle Isle Aquarium…

Lobby
The aquarium is located on Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan. It was designed by famed architect, Albert Kahn, and opened on August 18, 1904. The Aquarium closed in 2005 (it was the oldest continually operating aquarium in North America). The Aquarium then reopened on September 15, 2012. I could remember going here frequently as a child so I was they got the funding to re-open once again and I was very delighted to go back and visit.

One of the great things about this aquarium besides its small quaint size is the beautiful architecture. Sea green mosaic tiles line the ceiling making you feel like you’re underwater and the intricate details set in the stone set this aquarium apart from others. There was also a wide variety of sea life to see. Taking pictures of fish can be quite tricky since they’re constantly swimming around. That stingray, in the picture above, actually tried to block me from taking a picture.

The aquarium was a bit crowded since it’s only open on the weekends and admission is completely free. So I highly recommend going as early as possible. I think my favorite thing that I saw there was a tie between clown fish and the sea-horse. Besides the typical sea animals you might see at any aquarium, they also have an interesting exhibit on invasive species (ex. Asian Carp) and the Great Lakes in general.
Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservancy
Koi Fish pond
After leaving the aquarium, I stopped by the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservancy next door. The glass building is quite large and houses many varieties of local and wild plants from flowers to cactus’. If you like gardening or looking/learning about plants, this is also a great place to visit. And I love the quaint Koi fish pond that sits out front.
And in all, I had a great day and I can’t wait to visit again. Belle Island has a lot of great sights to see and places to visit so if you’re ever in the area, you should stop by!
