it’s very late, but I listened to 30/90 a little too much and Bryant struck me with this so here is a very rough little drabble with our wolf man
You don’t even remember your own birthday.
It makes sense, sort of. Your parents passed on far too long ago for you to even remember their faces clearly, let alone what your birthday was like. And even when those memories were clear, you just didn’t have the time, money, or energy to celebrate your birthday.
You did always make sure to get Navy something for hers though. May sixth. Even if money was tight and you had to give up something for yourself to do it, you would.
By the time the entire possession fiasco happened, you didn’t care enough about your own birthday to be even a little sad you had to skip out on so much. It didn’t really matter to you, getting older was getting older and you hadn’t really dwelled on it much. There was too much else going on for you to think about it.
That’s why, when Sam asked you when it was, you paused. It didn’t immediately spring to you, a date you could easily recite.
You had to dig for it, and you had to dig deep.
By the time you could really come up with anything, not even the actual answer you were asked to give, to reply with, Sam was looking up at you, worry creased into his doll face.
“Why don’t you remember your birthday?”
There was never enough time, never enough money, or never enough energy. Things that weren’t essential or for Navy’s sake were discarded, because you could get by just fine without a few of life’s luxuries.
But now you did have that time. You had the money for it and while you still lacked energy some days, you were doing much better than when you’d work yourself to the bone, cook something barely edible, then pass out to do it all again the next day.
Yet you still hadn’t celebrated your birthday in years, even when you’d slowly been letting yourself have some of these simpler things. You hadn’t even thought about your birthday, because it hadn’t meant anything to you in years past just another day.
“I don’t know, kid.” You said in reply, because it was easier than explaining the weird mix of disappointment and nonchalance swirling in your mind. “It’s just been a while since I’ve celebrated.”
Sam hummed, clearly thinking over his options, before hopping away to the door. “Stay here for a sec.” He left, and you slumped further into the balcony you were leaning on.
The moon was beautiful tonight, at least. You could distract yourself from the world for a bit in its presence, at least.
When Sam came back, either moments or minutes later, there was another set of footsteps with him.
Navy was chuckling as she walked up behind you, nudging you in the side. “C’mon, we’re going somewhere.”
You sputtered as Sam giggled, “Hold on, wh-“
“April twenty-ninth. Your birthday’s April twenty-ninth, you dumbass.” She , practically dragging you along. “Now, come on. We may as well catch up on a few and go out to eat something.”
Sam followed along. “Oi! Let me come too! I wanna go with you guys!”
You sighed, pulling yourself away from Navy and scooping Sam up onto your shoulder. “You remembered when my birthday was?” You didn’t even remember telling her that, and you assumed she was just too young to remember it from before your life fell apart.
“While you were possessed. One of them passed after I had woken up, and I couldn’t stop thinking about how we never did anything for them.”
You couldn’t say anything in response to that. By the way your sister, the one you had sacrificed everything to raise with only the small hope she’d be able to enjoy life one day, kept moving forward and started talking about a restaurant she’d seen recently, you guessed you weren’t supposed to.
It was odd. You kind of assumed, growing up, that you’d never get this kind of thing. The life where you had the time to enjoy yourself, or had the ability to do so in the first place. After you got used to it, you couldn’t say it bothered you much.
But, now you can just relax. Go and eat dinner with your family and have fun.
The entire scenario felt weird, but it wasn’t the bad kind. You could get used to it, if you let yourself.
So, with a deep breath, you just followed after her to wherever that restaurant she was bringing up was. You’d try to just have some fun for one night.
For your younger self, you’d try.
