Oh instead of showing the men’s short program lets badger Shiffrin about vomiting due to nerves.
NBC anchor just said that this is the first stop of three of games taking place in Asia which will give us a chance to “have a tour of all of the Asian cultures.” All of them. Three is all.
can y’all help me come up with a list of the most offensive/terrible stuff NBC gym coverage (in all its iterations) has ever said or done, since 1992? off the top of my head I’ve got:
“little girls dancing” in 96 (when half the team was over 18)
mistranslating a Sveta K fluff to make her sound bitchier
saying Alex Shevchenko had “so little talent” in 03
comments about He Kexin when Nastia lost the tiebreak in 08
al’s sexual comments about Nastia in 2008
the unnecessary dig at Huang Quishang’s leotard in 2011
making a huge deal out of mustafina’s arm wave in 2012
tim’s inability to pronounce words
sexual comments about Laurie in multiple years
al saying Simone’s mom and dad aren’t her parents & constantly bringing attention to the whole broken home thing throughout 2016
not showing a third of the gymnasts at 2016 Trials
al calling nastia annoying
but I know there’s a ton more than this so please add anything you can think of
Olympics drinking game
Take a drink every time broadcasters mansplain Take a shot every time they say something sexist Take a drink every time a men's event features athletes standing around waiting for an event to start or is running heats while a women's event is in final medal rounds and is unaired. Take a drink every time a women's medal ceremony for a gold medal, history making victory is shown on delay. 2 drinks if it's not aired til the next day. Take a drink every time NBC comes back from commercial break to say "coming up soon, olympics, right after these commercials" Take a shot every time the broadcasters give a single big-name athlete all the credit for a team medal. Pass out every time they give more attention to a certain apparently fabricated robbery story of certain swimmers.
Contriving to put the biggest events in primetime, regardless of time differences, has been a staple of TV coverage of the games since the very earliest days. (Whether this should continue to be the case in an age of social media and streaming remains an open question.) But with every Olympiad, NBC turns its coverage of these events more and more into a reality show.
NBC has sucked all of the suspense out of the Olympics - Vox
I watched some of the gymnastics live last weekend, and the difference was astounding. You really care more about the athletes when you’ve watched them through every moment, rather than just skipping to the “exciting” ones.
so you haven’t aired the event yet
but you tell us the results on the news that’s before the event
When it comes to the Olympics, it’s almost become their theme song.
